Spirit led swimmers and divers to a splashing success The swim team of Cardinal Newman was composed of fifteen boys and girls who enjoyed competi- tion and hard work. Some of its members practiced twice a day, sometimes as early as 5:30 a.m., in an attempt to retain the district title for their school. Even the bone- chilling winter weather did not dampen the spirits of the swimmers, who comprised one of the best teams in the state. Three of Newman ' s swimmers achieved national recognition for their talents. Patty Clark, senior, Jennifer Brothers and fvlatt Cetlinski, both juniors, participated throughout the United States. Their ability and attitude added to the team ' s sense of unity and their winning spirit. The diving team, however, was beset with problems when their coach, Mr. Fritz Hess quit in December, and the Amateur Athletic Union divers desbanded. Divers practiced whenever they wanted since the absence of a coach led to an unregulated schedule.

' mmmmmmm ' mfiimmmmm ' mmmmmmmmmmmm ' m Wrestlers have stamina With only three returning letter- men, the wrestling team did not have a winning season, although senior Ed Jarmakowitz was state champion. Coach Mike Wisneiwski declared; We are a young team, our emphasis was on building this year. The outstanding wrestlers were sophomore Ricky Oen, junior Rob Acosta, junior Tom Glancey, junior Drew Meyerwich, and senior captain Ed Jarmakowicz. The wrestlers not only worked hard at practice, but also became avid dieters. As junior David Logan suggested It was hard dieting because everyone was always so hungry after practice. Freshman John Raich observed the purpose of dieting, It is necessary to lose weight in order to wrestle in a lighter weight class which will hopefully result in a smaller opponent. i J 74 SPORTS
