Volleyball Spiking to victory It was a year of almosts for the varsity volleyball team. Under the guidance of Coach Colleen Courtney the varsity finished with a record of fifteen wins and six losses. However, that did not tell the story: the team had two years of experience and motivation, and a goal; the state finals. On November 6 the team ' s goal had come to an end, when they suddenly found the season over with an almost district title. The team was defeated in a tough three games, 15-12, 9-15, and 15-5 by Atlantic. For a young J.V. volleyball team the season did not prove quite as successful. Their season ended with a record of five wins and six losses. J.V. and varsity played from one to three games a week and practiced two hours on non-game days. Miss Courtney said their winning season was due to the teams ' great enthusiasm, desire to improve, and selflessness. Varsity Captain Mary Pat Hoffman said she would never forget the experience of being a member of such a unified team. Spirit led swimmers and divers to a splashing success The swim team of Cardinal Newman was composed of fifteen boys and girls who enjoyed competi- tion and hard work. Some of its members practiced twice a day, sometimes as early as 5:30 a.m., in an attempt to retain the district title for their school. Even the bone- chilling winter weather did not dampen the spirits of the swimmers, who comprised one of the best teams in the state. Three of Newman ' s swimmers achieved national recognition for their talents. Patty Clark, senior, Jennifer Brothers and fvlatt Cetlinski, both juniors, participated throughout the United States. Their ability and attitude added to the team ' s sense of unity and their winning spirit. The diving team, however, was beset with problems when their coach, Mr. Fritz Hess quit in December, and the Amateur Athletic Union divers desbanded. Divers practiced whenever they wanted since the absence of a coach led to an unregulated schedule.
