J.V. and Freshman Football They ' re movin ' on up Although the varsity football program is the showcase of Newman Athletics, there are also fine Junior Varsity and Freshman football pro- grams which provide a foundation for the years to come. Because of the hard work of coaches Mr. Art Steffes and Mr. Mike Wisniewski, these programs are able to exist. Both coaches agreed that the outcome of the games is not as important as teaching the players the fundamen- tals that will allow them to better assert themselves on the varsity level. Both coaches also agreed that their programs allowed the players to practice good sportsmanship, leader- ship, and esprit de corps. To me, It ' s not whether we win or lose. I gauge my success on the number of my former players that play consistently on the varsity, said Coach Wis- nieweski. Because of the influx of young talent in recent years, Cardinal Newman ' s Junior Varsity and Fresh- man football teams will continue to provide for a flourishing varsity squad. Volleyball Spiking to victory It was a year of almosts for the varsity volleyball team. Under the guidance of Coach Colleen Courtney the varsity finished with a record of fifteen wins and six losses. However, that did not tell the story: the team had two years of experience and motivation, and a goal; the state finals. On November 6 the team ' s goal had come to an end, when they suddenly found the season over with an almost district title. The team was defeated in a tough three games, 15-12, 9-15, and 15-5 by Atlantic. For a young J.V. volleyball team the season did not prove quite as successful. Their season ended with a record of five wins and six losses. J.V. and varsity played from one to three games a week and practiced two hours on non-game days. Miss Courtney said their winning season was due to the teams ' great enthusiasm, desire to improve, and selflessness. Varsity Captain Mary Pat Hoffman said she would never forget the experience of being a member of such a unified team.
