RIGHT: It isn ' t all work and no play as Scott Jacobs, gives a friendly shove to Jeff Shahin, both freshmen. All work and some play Shrill whistles, tired moans and groans, harsh belittling connmands and the pounding of cleats pro- claimed the debut of grueling football practices. The torrid heat, combined with the high humidity, caused agony for the players during their practice sessions. No one fainted, but some wish they had. Team meetings were followed by sweltering workouts consisting of running drills to get the players in top physical shape. At one point Tom Glancey, junior, asked, If God intended It to be so hot, why did He invent people? The Crusaders practiced on Saturdays and were rewarded with a holiday on Sunday. A water break was given, but the players were rubbing their sore, red foreheads by the end of the day. With the acquisition of their gear, the team was ready to learn the art of blocking on various-sized stuffed dummies. Day after day of afternoon practices involved timing of plays and seemingly endless repetition. The exhausted, soaking wet players would finish practice covered with dirt. Finally, the players were deemed physically fit by the coaches and were out fitted with an practice uniform, consisting of pads that protected nearly the entire body. After enduring tackling drills against each other (no dummies this time), the Crusader football teams were ready for their games. 66 SPORTS
