Varsity Football con,. Another one Anticipation of the new season by the Crusaders varsity football team reached an all time low at approximately 8:30 AM on August 15. This time marked the beginning of the torturous mile run, the annual test of endurance for the under zealous squad. Then, the team began its dread- ed two day practice sessions, in the sweltering heat which led some players such as senior, Bill Bottcher, to ask, Is it worth it? As the season progressed and the games began, however, the attitude of the team became one which was summed up by senior Dennis Cleary when he said, Prac- tice is hell, but the victories on Friday nights make it all worthwhile . One especially gratifying victory was a 19-12 win over arch-rival Atlantic High School. This was the first time in eight seasons that Newman had defeated Atlantic and it required three goal line stands to do so. Defensive standouts for the game were senior linebacker, Tony Walker, and junior linebacker, Pat Maloy, while offensively. Bud Rossomme had three catches, including his 1st two varsity T.D. ' s. The locker room scene after this game was one of jubilation, during which every coach was thrown into the shower, and also during which the usually expressionless Tony Walker cracked a smile. This victory was all but forgotten two weeks later following a crushing defeat at the hands of the third ranked Glades Central Raiders. This defeat ruined the Crusaders ' chances for a state championship, but despite the loss, the team regrouped and went on to win its final six games and a share of the conference champion- ship for the first time since 1972. Varsity football Newman ' s season was not with- out its humorous moments. These included the fashionable high-top cleats worn by junior Tom Glancy and seniors Bud Rossomme and John Kerns, the makeup consisting of black paint under the eyes when the team played Jupiter, nominations for scapegoat of the week on the post-game bus rides, and the intrigu- ing art work decorating selected lockerroom posters. Coaches and players found that they could combine hard work with lighter moments, and jokes were not omitted from lockerroom talk. All team experiences — winning, losing, having fun and sharing it all — won ' t be forgotten by the members of the 1980 football squad. They were too close-knit.
