Sam Budnyk: more than just a coach He considers himself a teacher and a coach, but his colleagues and students say he is more than that. For twenty years Sam Budnyk has been the athletic director at Newman. As Mr. Mike Wisneiwski assistant coach says, He knows his business. For Budnyk, the most enjoyable part of his job is, seeing the number of youngsters that are competing in sports. Approximately forty percent of the students at Newman par- ticipate in athletics, but Budnyk would like to see everyone on a team because, it helps with your growth physically, emotionally, and socially. Budnyk is a man of responsibili- ties. Among his many tasks he handles details such as eligibility of the athletes, stadium rentals, ticket sales, and insurance policies. Susan Kehr, a senior on the Softball team, recognizes Budnyk as an extremely organized person. Because of the amount of paperwork that is done, Budnyk would not mind having a secretary for one or two hours a day. He also teaches two classes and coaches varsity football and girls ' Softball. Senior Robert Denton, one of Budnyk ' s students says, He won ' t take excuses, but he ' s a fair person. Pat Maloy, a junior football player, believes that everyone on the team respects him and Jose Almeida, a senior, says, He ' s a great coach! Coach Budnyk ' s ambition as an athletic director is the same as his goal as a coach. He would like to see a few state championships in the same year. The satisfaction that the youngsters get from competing is the reason Budnyk continues his work at Newman. He says he enjoys the work that he does although there is an overabundance of paperwork, and the facilities are limited. As a family man, Sam Budnyk is respected by his children. Although Francis, Rita, Sam, and Mike Budnyk have ail participated in athletics, it has been their choice. Rita Budnyk, senior, explains that she, gets along real well with her father and she wishes that people were not afraid to talk to him, because he is really a nice guy. Coach Budnyk states that he and his wife would support their children even if they wanted to play the piano or dance ballet. Coach Sam Budnyk is definitely a man for all seasons. Responsible for at least 450 contests per year, Budnyk is concerned with the welfare of the Newman student and athlete. He is a man of authority who likes what he is doing. Varsity Football con,. Another one Anticipation of the new season by the Crusaders varsity football team reached an all time low at approximately 8:30 AM on August 15. This time marked the beginning of the torturous mile run, the annual test of endurance for the under zealous squad. Then, the team began its dread- ed two day practice sessions, in the sweltering heat which led some players such as senior, Bill Bottcher, to ask, Is it worth it? As the season progressed and the games began, however, the attitude of the team became one which was summed up by senior Dennis Cleary when he said, Prac- tice is hell, but the victories on Friday nights make it all worthwhile . One especially gratifying victory was a 19-12 win over arch-rival Atlantic High School. This was the first time in eight seasons that Newman had defeated Atlantic and it required three goal line stands to do so. Defensive standouts for the game were senior linebacker, Tony Walker, and junior linebacker, Pat Maloy, while offensively. Bud Rossomme had three catches, including his 1st two varsity T.D. ' s. The locker room scene after this game was one of jubilation, during which every coach was thrown into the shower, and also during which the usually expressionless Tony Walker cracked a smile. This victory was all but forgotten two weeks later following a crushing defeat at the hands of the third ranked Glades Central Raiders. This defeat ruined the Crusaders ' chances for a state championship, but despite the loss, the team regrouped and went on to win its final six games and a share of the conference champion- ship for the first time since 1972.
