Behind the teams COACH BUDNYK 60 FOOTBALL 62 OUTSIDE ATHLETICS 104 MANAGERS 106 It was a memorable year in sports at Newman. Teams strived for victory and the effort was evident in their games. The dedication of the athletes was seen in both individual and team sports. It was a We almost made it year for football and volleyball, but an All right! We made it year for cross-country, track, and swimming. Every athlete worked to the best of his ability, and each portrayed the characteristics of a true Crusader. Senior Bill Bottclner, junior Liz Ann Butler, freshman Barbara McCranels and sophomore Alonzo Jeffer- son emphasize the dedication of a Newman athlete who spends hours working out on the weight machine. Sam Budnyk: more than just a coach He considers himself a teacher and a coach, but his colleagues and students say he is more than that. For twenty years Sam Budnyk has been the athletic director at Newman. As Mr. Mike Wisneiwski assistant coach says, He knows his business. For Budnyk, the most enjoyable part of his job is, seeing the number of youngsters that are competing in sports. Approximately forty percent of the students at Newman par- ticipate in athletics, but Budnyk would like to see everyone on a team because, it helps with your growth physically, emotionally, and socially. Budnyk is a man of responsibili- ties. Among his many tasks he handles details such as eligibility of the athletes, stadium rentals, ticket sales, and insurance policies. Susan Kehr, a senior on the Softball team, recognizes Budnyk as an extremely organized person. Because of the amount of paperwork that is done, Budnyk would not mind having a secretary for one or two hours a day. He also teaches two classes and coaches varsity football and girls ' Softball. Senior Robert Denton, one of Budnyk ' s students says, He won ' t take excuses, but he ' s a fair person. Pat Maloy, a junior football player, believes that everyone on the team respects him and Jose Almeida, a senior, says, He ' s a great coach! Coach Budnyk ' s ambition as an athletic director is the same as his goal as a coach. He would like to see a few state championships in the same year. The satisfaction that the youngsters get from competing is the reason Budnyk continues his work at Newman. He says he enjoys the work that he does although there is an overabundance of paperwork, and the facilities are limited. As a family man, Sam Budnyk is respected by his children. Although Francis, Rita, Sam, and Mike Budnyk have ail participated in athletics, it has been their choice. Rita Budnyk, senior, explains that she, gets along real well with her father and she wishes that people were not afraid to talk to him, because he is really a nice guy. Coach Budnyk states that he and his wife would support their children even if they wanted to play the piano or dance ballet. Coach Sam Budnyk is definitely a man for all seasons. Responsible for at least 450 contests per year, Budnyk is concerned with the welfare of the Newman student and athlete. He is a man of authority who likes what he is doing.
