cont. doing well in school, and not involved in any particular extracurricular activities, I felt the need to find something to occupy some of my spare time, Todd stated. Since then he has been working six nights a week at El Pelcio, a Mexican Restaurant. work because I like the responsibility of having a job and the extra money is nice to have to spend any way I wish. -Kim Clark, sophomore I work because I like the responsibility of having a job and the extra money is nice to have to spend any way I wish. This comment by Kim Clark, sophomore, reflected the views of many Newman students, since it often became tedious to constantly accept money from par- ents. Kim was one student who worked for her family owned busi- ness, Don ' s Cheveron. She could usually be found pumping gas and checking oil on the customers ' vehicles after school and on Satur- days. Working was also a good exper- ience because it taught students to budget their time wisely. Senior Beth Samson felt that work doesn ' t really interfere with school because I know that I wouldn ' t be studying if I was at home anyway. I usually find time for studying and homework at night. Not all students worked in their area of interest. As senior Mike Healy, who worked at McDonald ' s, expressed, It is not very likely for this to become my future career. This job is more like a stepping stone. Mike was one of those who worked to save money for future use in college. He did not use his earned income just for pleasures. These students were a few steps ahead of the average high school student, since they have been exposed to the working world. STUDENT LIFE 51

When you ' re down in trouble, and you need a helping hand, I ' ll be there You ' ve got a friend Zoom in at a Newman party. Two girls, Betsey and Anne, join in the festivities of a typical Newman evening. A senior, Clarl , approaches Betsey. After chatting for a few moments Betsey interrupts him, Clark, I ' d like to introduce you to MY FRIEND Anne. These words convey a deep meaning. They introduce the feelings involved in friendship: trust, love, loyalty, good times, pride, and companionship. The definition of a friend is one attached to another by affection, regard, or esteem. How- ever, what is a friend in reality? Loyalty? Love? A shoulder to cry on? Good times? Karen Pastorino, fresh- man, believes; A friend is someone who sticks with you whether it be good times or bad. Through thick and through thin as the saying goes. Barbara Kissner, junior, tells of her friendship with Spanish teacher Mrs. Sue Watson, We understand each other. She tells me about her outer school activities in life and I tell her mine along with my future pro- spects. Friends are a part of life. Without them they would make each in- dividual a loner, with no one to go out with, no one to talk to, no one to share and love. A hermit. As Lucille Ricardo and Ethel Mertz of I Love Lucy once sang in a dramatic performance: If you ' re ever in a jam, here I am. If you ' re ever up a tree, call on me. If you ' re ever down a well, ring my bell. If you ' re ever in jail, I ' m your bail. Its friendship, friendship, just the perfect blendship. When other friend- ships have been forgot, ours will still be hot. Da Da Da Da Da Da Zing Zing Zing.
