The athletes headed for the practice field and some fled to the nearest T.V. set to pick up the latest scoop on General Hospital. But many students zoomed off for their jobs. Most of these students who held down part-time jobs felt that working was a good experience not only for the added income but also for the knowledge which they gained. Students worked in restaur- ants, boutiques, sporting good stores, fast food chains, depart- ment stores, offices, or in family owned businesses. Pat Licata, senior, stated, I plan to continue working for my father in the sporting goods busi- ness, and also to take business management courses in the hopes that I will become a manager of one of our stores. cont. doing well in school, and not involved in any particular extracurricular activities, I felt the need to find something to occupy some of my spare time, Todd stated. Since then he has been working six nights a week at El Pelcio, a Mexican Restaurant. work because I like the responsibility of having a job and the extra money is nice to have to spend any way I wish. -Kim Clark, sophomore I work because I like the responsibility of having a job and the extra money is nice to have to spend any way I wish. This comment by Kim Clark, sophomore, reflected the views of many Newman students, since it often became tedious to constantly accept money from par- ents. Kim was one student who worked for her family owned busi- ness, Don ' s Cheveron. She could usually be found pumping gas and checking oil on the customers ' vehicles after school and on Satur- days. Working was also a good exper- ience because it taught students to budget their time wisely. Senior Beth Samson felt that work doesn ' t really interfere with school because I know that I wouldn ' t be studying if I was at home anyway. I usually find time for studying and homework at night. Not all students worked in their area of interest. As senior Mike Healy, who worked at McDonald ' s, expressed, It is not very likely for this to become my future career. This job is more like a stepping stone. Mike was one of those who worked to save money for future use in college. He did not use his earned income just for pleasures. These students were a few steps ahead of the average high school student, since they have been exposed to the working world. STUDENT LIFE 51
