On the road again Over highways, over dale, Crusaders hit the awesome trail. Whether Newman students lived as far north as Jupiter or as far south as Boca Raton, they all had to seek transportation that would carry them safely to school no later than 8:05. I ' m almost there as soon as I roll out of bed, declared Mary Pat Hoffman, senior, who lives directly across the street from the parking lot. Others didn ' t have it so easy like sophomore Marion Romero who rode a bus every day for 45 minutes from Delray. Those long rides down 1-95 often resulted in a student perfect- ing the fine art of simultaneously driving, eating, dressing, studying, and still singing to the radio. Obstacles were often a part of the ride: traffic jams due to an accident, flooding caused by heavy April showers, raised bridges and unexpected detours. The result? Tardy again. Students always were pre- pared with excuses, resorting to tales of hunting down stray pets, losing keys, and having to take two showers due to stubborn creme rinse. Dean Ken Berg said his favorite excuse of all time was that of senior Sharon Schattie who claimed her car was towed, and she couldn ' t pay her gum fine because she had to get her car back, and she was worried she wouldn ' t have enough gas to get home and . . . Those same storytellers, how- ever, always managed to find transportation home after those resulting Friday detentions. 28 STUDENT LIFE
