Sophomores headed to Disney World for great escspe On February 16, approximately one hundred sophomores headed for school an hour earlier than usual, where they boarded busses that whisked them off to Disney World. After accumulating points for performing such activities as selling baked goods, washing cars, and building a float for Homeco ming, hard-working sophomores were given tickets and let loose for a day of eating junk food, riding roller coasters, buying souvenirs, getting lost, and taking pictures of their friends. One of the highlights of the trip occurred when a few students unbuckled their seat belts on Space Mountain, causing the ride to shut down for forty-five minutes. They were sternly escort- ed to the security office where they waited until a chaperone arrived to retrieve them. Another sophomore had to be calmed down by his friends after a tangle with Goofy who was being a bit too friendly with his girlfriend. Finally, at 7:00 p.m. weary but still excited students gathered in the parking lot to board the busses for the three-hour trip back home. With class President Renai Givens ' urging, most of them had pur- chased identical hats with the brims turned up and their names sewn o n the front. Once on the bus most students groaned about how much they had eaten, but one voice yelled from the back, Can ' t we stop for some ice cream? Freshmen Fever: It ' s Contagious! The first year for the class of ' 84 can best be described as remarkable. Most freshmen can remember vividly the hot day in August when they were assigned their homerooms and the next few days after that when they were desperately seeking classes and trying to decide what lunch they should go to. RIGHT: Beth Hill, Mike Fury and Michele Kristensen display great enthusiasm while working on class float. But once things began to get normal an amazing thing hap- pened. School enthusiasm began to catch on. Freshmen seemed to realize that they were privileged to be at Cardinal Newman. This was most clearly evident in the first place taking of the raffle activities. Another strong point of the fresh- men class was the attendance. Freshmen on the average, have the least amount of absentees. The prospects of the freshman class are many and assuming that It remains that way the class of 84 has an excellent chance for greatness, said John Voss. 304 FRESHMEN
