Newman ' s first and most impor- tant commandment was Thou shalt not break the rules. Students, however, often found the time and place to break these sacred rules. Those daredevils, if caught, faced a $5.00 fine for chewing gum or eating. and suspension or expulsion for gambling, smoking, and cheating. It was rare o find a student at Newman who had not broken at least one rule. Whether it was cutting the lunch line or wearing a non-uniform shirt, some students not only broke the rules, but also they had the uncanny ability of not being caught in the act. Boldly, they found ways to bend the rules every which way; afterall, rules were made to be broken. ABOVE: Junior John Cassandra knows when to hold ' em and when to fold ' em. During Shave and a haircut, two bits Section D, page 7 of the Student Parent Handbook states: the standard uniform for girls will consist of the uniform skirt or slacks and a uniform blouse buttoned. The standard uniform for boys will consist of uniform pants, including belts at all times. Students will at all times wear the school uniform; all clothing must be neat and clean. Newman students, however, didn ' t always practice what was preached. Students tried to create their own version of the Newman Ties . . . they get me all choked up. ' ' -Mike Cleary. junior uniform which usually resulted in a detention. One memorable exper- ience occured when four seniors, Bruce Trotter, Paul Hogan, Franky Fundora, and Joe Coates, attempt- ed to combat the warm weather. These seniors exclusively designed the Newman Knickerbockers. As senior Bruce Trotter stated, It was a short day so we wore shorts. However the more conservative administration did not find this new fashion to their taste, and the group was punished. When the second and third quarters arrived, the complaint was ties. Mike Cleary, junior, declared, Ties . . . they get me all choked up. The above-the-collar haircut was also a part of the Newman uniform. Some faculty members, like math teacher Mrs. Sandy Burlingame requested that shaggy- haired boys stand for inspection, when it looked as though the barbers weren ' t receiving any business. When January and February arrived, bringing cold weather, the girls welcomed the opportunity to be creative. Colorful sweaters and knee socks came out of the closets, along with blazers for extra warmth. The favorite Izods, monogrammed sweaters, last years velours, and warm-up jackets added spots of color throughout the halls. The most popular shoe style for both boys and girls was the Docksider. Tennis shoes and espa- drilles ran a close second, but received competition from this years fad, the penny loafer. The uniform was just another part of Newman that made it different. Students complained, but It was a short day so we wore shorts. -Bruce Trotter, senior took advantage of any rules that could be avoided. These infractions caused some memorable moments, but who knows what next year will bring. Imagine, Newman goes new wave? STUDENT L!FE 27
