Any person would like to travel over the summer, but how about between Gainesville and Lake Worth more than five times, not for recreation, but for operations? Or some people like to rest in bed, but how about a body cast for a month? That ' s what Jeff experienced. You see, I was born a dwarf, and because of that, my bones never turned hard; they remained mostly cartilage. As I got heavier my bones began to get deformed. This hap- pened around the hips, especially at the hip socket, where it began to lose its shape, Jeff explained. It was the help of a doctor at John Hopkins in Baltimore that helped correct Jeff ' s problem. In a series of operations Jeff ' s bones were broken and reset. It was during this time, when he was placed in a cast, that his mother kept him from getting depressed. She would come everyday and take care of me while I was in the cast because I was totally helpless, Jeff said. Jeff said he doesn ' t know what kept him working all the time, though knowing that eve ryone was praying for him and the get-well card from the junior class lifted his spirits. I wanted to give up. I ' ve had problems before. I kept thinking, ' It will work out ' . Fellow juniors June Hunt, Barbara Kissner and Karen Kildea welcome Jeff Lewis back to school. JUNIORS 283
