Newman ' s first and most impor- tant commandment was Thou shalt not break the rules. Students, however, often found the time and place to break these sacred rules. Those daredevils, if caught, faced a $5.00 fine for chewing gum or eating. and suspension or expulsion for gambling, smoking, and cheating. It was rare o find a student at Newman who had not broken at least one rule. Whether it was cutting the lunch line or wearing a non-uniform shirt, some students not only broke the rules, but also they had the uncanny ability of not being caught in the act. Boldly, they found ways to bend the rules every which way; afterall, rules were made to be broken. ABOVE: Junior John Cassandra knows when to hold ' em and when to fold ' em.
