ibr in @rclas 01] Behind the scenes: VOLUNTEERS 270 JUNIORS 272 SOPHOMORES 288 FRESHMEN 304 w Crowded stairwells were a typical scene as students rushed to their next class before the tardy bell rang. hen Father Curley gave his opening address to the parents at the first Home-School meeting, he described the freshmen as confused, sophomores as sophisticated but boisterous and juniors as much more mature. As the year progressed, however, freshmen lost those puzzled expressions as they became more familiar with Newman ' s rotating class schedule. Sophomores remained boisterous, displaying their class unity at pep rallies with shrill cheers. And the juniors? They led the school in spirit and enthusiasm, setting examples for both the freshman and sophomore classes. UNDERCLASSMEN 269

Volunteers They gave ' til it hurt Many Newman students gave up their free time to volunteer for various organizations, such as juniors Schree Hach, Tina Paine, and Mabel Olivera. Schree Hach has been tutoring retarded citizens for five years. She began when her mother opened the first group home in Palm Beach County eleven years ago in her own home. The Hach Group is a residence for retarded children and for adults who had adapted to society and can handle a job. Schree explained that the purpose of the home is to help the retarded function in society. To see the joy they feel when they accomplish what we take for granted, according to Schree, is what makes her work worthwhile. For Tina Paine, who volunteers at North Shore Retirement Home in West Palm Beach, working with the elderly is like being the grand- daughter they never had. Even though she just started working there, she said her volunteer job has become very rewarding, because the elderly have no one to talk to about their problems, and Tina feels that she helps them overcome their depression. Tina also worked as a candy striper at St. Mary ' s three years ago, and when asked for her help at the retirement home, she im- mediately accepted the offer and was delighted to help them. The part I like best about it is that I can set my own hours. No one has to tell me what time to be there; I can just go there when I want to, she said. The feeling of helping people is why junior Mabel Olivera became a volunteer at Good Samaritan Hospital. She started her work last summer after taking a CPR course from the Red Cross. I decided to be a candy striper because I wanted to experience that one- to-one feeling with people. This would help because I want to be a psychiatrist, and it was a good chance to get to know patients and how they feel. Above all, volunteers from Newman have learned a sense of responsibility from all their duties at their jobs. They find it rewarding to work for others and to be a valuable part of their community.
