Senioritis The class of 81 was the first to be struck with senioritis the first day of school. Senioritis was a way of life, an attitude, that was ex- pressed during such events as Ring Day Mass, Homecoming, Prom, Grad Nite, and every weekend night. It could be summed up with the declaration, We ' re the best! On certain days the seniors enjoyed the privilege of coming out of uniform. For example, on Halloween they exhibited their creative abilities by dressing up as Punk Rockers, Greaser s, and Babies. The babies, including Bryan Megrath and Cathy Canape, had to be sent home to mommy by the dean because of their brief attire. Some teachers accused the seniors of being apathetic toward their studies, but the majority of seniors were striving to do the best they could in order to be accepted by the college of their choice and to finally obtain their diploma at gradua- tion. Several symptoms of senioritis included the fad of wearing a cardboard eight-pack holder as a hat which read Budweiser or Mi- chelob. Another was the carrying of few books while others bided their time by filling out at least six college applications, taking the SAT at least three times, going to the wrong lunch, talking extremely loud, and worrying aloud about a letter of college acceptance. -cont.- Betsy Hoadley adds a little craziness to her day. Senioritis ... they went wild! Another aspect of senioritis was the great interest the class showed in the Crusader football team. Since the majority of players were seniors, the class actually cared whether or not the team won. To the senior athletes, senioritis meant their last chance to participate in their respective sports. It was for this reason that many athletes played with greater intensity. No matter the meaning of senioritis to each individual, the class of ' 81 will never forget their last year at Newman. It was a year filled with confrontations between teachers and students, old and new friendships, wild and crazy experiences, heart- breaks and smiles, and finally their ultimate goal; graduation. 262 SENIORS
