M SlfD pDFDl [La On page one of the Student Par- ent Handbook Cardinal Newman High School is defined as a Christian educational community reflecting the basic premise that all men have their origin in God and seek God as their final Destiny. But that definition doesn ' t tell all. It doesn ' t show students, faculty and administrators coming together at The main thing was to get people involved in mass. -Fr. Steve Vasek School Chaplain masses to celebrate the eucharist, it doesn ' t show the solitude of someone kneeling at the altar in the chapel, or the football team saying a prayer in the locker room at halftime. It doesn ' t express the feelings of students who put their spiritual messages on banners: Life is fragile; handle with prayer, Those who bring love to the lives of others can ' t keep it from themselves, and Life is God ' s gift to you; what you make of it is your gift to God. Religion at Newman is a way of life. This year religion took on a new and more communicative form at Newman. School Chaplain, Fr. Steve Vasek made the morning prayers more informal, more relative to the lives of teenagers. Masses became more modernistic and students found themselves taking an active role in the liturgy. Slide shows with pictures of students, a spiritual dance of the nativity scene and Sydney the Christmas tree, were just a few of the means used to make the mass a more spiritual, personal experience. Fr. Vasek said, The main thing was to get people involved in mass. By using words in relationship with modern music both students and faculty could relate more. Soph- omore Victoria Thompson agreed: It was more personal because it didn ' t involve all ' ectures; there were music and slides so IX got the point across better. A parish retreat program was developed on which students spent the day at their home parish to understand what their Church was all about. Senior, Panna Tornambe said, It opened up my mind about what Church is and what it ' s all about and how it can play a role in my life.
