Goodbye beach cant. Upperclassmen comments dwelled on anticipation about the future. If the first week of school showed an insight of what the school year will be like, said junior Barbara Kissner, then it should be a good year. Senior Joe Coates said, I ' m glad we ' re finishing our final year at Cardinal Newman because of all the prospects of the future we have. One memorable experience which many students said they ' d rather forget was the book sale. No sooner had the dismissal bell rung, when a herd of stampeding pupils raced for the gym. In the midst of blazing heat and an immobile line, Mrs. Alicia Rafter, English and Latin teacher, shouted, Remember, you are human beings! as students pushed and shoved their way into the cafeteria. Senior worker at the book sale, John Stebor, said, It was organized because we controlled the students, but we could have had more books. Students impatiently waited until 4;00 only to find that the books they needed were sold out. Eileen Mullen, senior, expressed the concern and anger of both parents and students by stating, Many freshmen didn ' t know about the used book sale. Their bills came to about $200. A lot of the kids feel that there are too many books for one subject. Sometimes only one-third of the book ' s contents is covered because several books are ordered for one class. Why don ' t they just order one book and finish it? several students wondered. Finally, the long lines ended, but an even more frustrating wait was in store: car pools. ABOVE: Short-tempered students endured hot weather, long lines and high prices at the book sales.
