Cafeteria Staff Superburgers, etc. Superburger day, Luv, was a popular phrase originated by Mrs. Marie Warren. The Newman ' s cafeteria staff was in charge of fulfilling one of the basic needs of the students: food, and according to Mrs. Warren: We offer nothing but the best. It is top choice food. We rank at the top with the Health Department. The we that Mrs. Warren talked about is Food Services International, the com- pany that sold the food to the students. It began seventeen years ago when Mrs. Warren volunteered to run the little food store in the backyard. Along with volunteer mothers, she sold food such as potato chips, soda, and ice cream when there was only one vary crowded lunch period. One of the mothers fainted from claustro- phobia, she declared. After the little food store, the cafeteria was located where the library now is. Most of the food was in vending machines, and one time a student hit the jackpot on one. Coins scatte red all over the floor. Other students joined in the wealth, said Mrs. Warren. Now the cafeteria is in a separate building next to the gymnasium. Mrs. Warren ran the cafeteria with the help of the following staff members: Mrs. Mary Scalfani, Mrs. Victoria Sermon, Miss Mary Wynn, and Mrs. Jean James.

Janitors Someone has to do the dirty work N hether you were at school during the day or night, the maintenance personnel always were watching, repairing, and securing Newman. To some New- man students they were friends, people to whom they talked to day in and day out. To others they were simply familiar faces seen at school. Still others viewed them as disciplinarians: people who watched for any unlawful smoking, drinking, or corruption. They were Mr. Bill Conover, Mr. Johnny Linton, Mr. Robert Manuel, and Mr. Fred Manuel. Another function of the cus- todians was to repair. They built, rebuilt, and put things back together again all year long. For example, they tinkered with clocks, frames, lights, and the new com- puter table, the volleyball net mechanism, everything and anyth- ing. The janitors ' jobs also entailed beautifying and securing the school. For example, they installed the new yellow poles bordering the school, kept tidy grounds, locked up at night, and repainted the classroom, hallways, and bath- rooms (to remove the graffiti). Hill vandalized the school with their gutter language? Those walls were clean by lunchtime. Guess who did it? If Fred or Mr. Conover are in the building, will they please report to the central office. 196 ACADEMICS
