Teachers -r ' .n ; ' RIGHT: Fr. Don O ' Brien begins his leisurely ride around the school grounds. BELOW: History teacher Mr. Pat O ' Hare plays a few chords for juniors, Mike Lesinski, Tom DeLoreto, and Schree Hach. Fr. Don O ' Brien has such hob- bies as photography, stamp collecting, and one for which he is known worldwide: chess. He is one of seventy- five chess masters of the world and brought his talents to Newman by sponsoring the Chess Club. A former tile setter Mr. Patrick O ' Hare changed his profession to teaching history. He said he enjoys sharing his knowledge with the student body. Mr. O ' Hare is known for taking out his guitar and strum- ming for his fans after school. Mrs. Jane Panse, P.E. teacher, said, 1 like seeing a different side of students that other teachers don ' t see. In her time away from school she is involved in a marriage preparation course, and to relax and unwind from a hard day, she can be found swimming or fishing. Mrs. Alicia Rafter may be an English and Latin teacher at New- man, but above that she is a mother and wife. After leaving school she serves as chauffeur, cook, nurse, Cub Scout Committee member, and many other roles. Math department chairman, Sr. Anne Richard has only one complaint about teaching, and that is lunch duty. One of her jobs is distributing uniforms, but being a refunder is her hobby. She collects all kinds of coupons, enough to help pay for two new computers for the math depart- ment. 188 ACADEMICS

MIDDLE AND RIGHT: In a tennis match after school, P.E. teacher Miss Lila Veenker serves an overhead smash to school chaplain, Fr. Steve Vasek. IVIr. Roger Schram, English teacher, noted for starting class three minutes early, said he is happy to be back in the classroom after serving as dean, adding that he loves teaching, but dislikes students ' wasting their time in class. Mrs. Dorothy Thompson, religion teacher, replaced Mrs. Mary Mook w hen she took maternity leave, second semester. Miss Lila Veenker, freshman P.E. teacher, and girls ' J.V. basket- ball coach, enjoyed telling her students about her years in Africa w hen she served as a Peace Corps volunteer. Father Steve Vasek, school chaplain, concerned himself vi ith spiritual life at Newman, beginning the day with a prayer over the intercom, and planning masses and sponsoring retreat days at various parishes throughout the year.
