Foreign Language Department Buenas Dias, Bonjour and Howdy The Department of Foreign Languages offered studies in three languages, Spanish, French, and Latin, but students learned more than how to say hello and goodbye. Often the aroma of Spanish food would emanate from Mrs. Sue Watson ' s room, as students sam- pled Polio, Empanditas, Flan, and other Spanish dishes. At Christmas, students broke pinatas and scram- bled for the goodies which scat- tered across the floor. French students sampled French cuisine when they traveled to Chez Moustache, and became art critics at The Norton Museum of Art. Latin students hosted a forum for area high schools and came away with most of the awards. Foreign Language teachers were Miss Pat Curtin, chairman, Mrs. Estelle Morrison, Mrs. Judy Wright, Sister Clare Gleeson, Sister Noel and Mrs. Alicia Rafter. BELOW: Seniors Gina Arsenault and Ana Ballestero perform the tango for amused Spanish students. ACADEMICS 163

Business Department The executives of tomorrow It was one of the smallest departments at Newman, yet one of the most important because busi- ness is one of the most popular career choices today. The business department had three teachers: Miss Winifred Leary, Mrs. Mary Landry, and Mrs. Nancy Crew. Miss Leary, who has been the chairman for three years, said the department has grown in that time, but she expresses a hope for more growth. The department focuses on two basic subjects: typing, and accounting A typing student had a choice of the semester course, personal typing, or the yearly course Typing I or II. Miss Leary offered one word of advice for all students: I feel all students should at least take a personal typing course before graduating from high school. ABOVE: With the keyboard chart behind her, Mrs. Mary Landry, typing teacher, prepares to give her students another lesson. RIGHT: Debbie Clemens, senior, works on increasing her typing speed and accuracy. 162 ACADEMICS

Physical Education Department Getting in shape Remember going to class all sweaty because you ' d just come from P.E.? You may have stood in front of the air-conditioner to dry your hair, nearly catching pneumonia. But the process of getting sweaty was fun, especially beating the other team in the basketball game that they were sure they would win. The Physical Education Department faculty were Mrs. Jane Panse, Mrs. Lila Veeker, Mr. Jim Arbogast, Mr. Sam Budnyk and Mr. Jack Kokinda. They offered every student a rigorous routine of physical activity from softball to hockey to volleyball. Who could ever forget those Presidential Physical Fitness activities? Panting, stumbling, and coughing were just a few symptoms of just getting over the 600! When finally junior year came around, the relief of no more P.E. was quickly replaced with regret. There were of course those who, rather than taking another acedemic course, decided to take P.E. III. They just couldn ' t get enough! t64 ACADEMICS
