Performing Arts Department Talent found expression in music, drama, speech, and art; The Performing Arts Depart- ment offered a variety of courses which permitted the student to express his creativity in a number of vi ays: public speaking, acting, singing, and art. Mr. Hal Johnstone, chairman, instructed classes, and offered students the opportunity to audi- tion for the Newman Players productions. Mr. Patrick Keenan, speech teacher, also served as moderator of Newman ' s award-winning chapter of the National Forensic League. Humanities courses were pw wiwi ' ift iii ' ,i,.jy taught by Mrs. Anne Hoyt, who introduced students to a com- orehensive study of the fine arts, including music, sculpture, paint- ing, architecture, and philosophy. Students were encouraged to develop their own artistic talent through a variety of creative projects. Mrs. Hoyt also directed New- man ' s choral groups. Mrs. Jane Anderson, art in- structor, offered comprehensive studies in several art media, such as charcoal drawing, pastels, water colors, pen and ink, woodcut print, and mosaics. The Art II course was more complicated. Projects included silk-screening, oil painting, tie dye, and sculpture. Open discussion were always encouraged by Mrs. Anderson whose students expressed their opinions on topics such as artistic technique, art origin, and General Hospital. Overall, the Performing Arts Department encouraged students to develop their own ability so that they would become aware of the increasing value of art and be committed to the preservation and performance of these arts.
