Where do we go from here? The Guidance Department coun- seled the student on three major subjects; academic works, career planning, and personal problems. Getting to know each freshman as a person was Sr. Mary Mark ' s goal. She saw each student at least twice a year and in this time encouraged good study habits. She began to guide freshmen in the direction of their interests. One of Sr. Helen ' s many duties was to help seniors by choosing the college that was right for them and setting up appointments for students with college representatives. She compiled student records and wrote recommendations for the graduates. Sr. Anne was test coordinator for the A.G.T. and S.A.T. in addition to being the junior counselor. Fr. Griffin attempted to get to know all the sophomores and dis- cover each individual ' s potential. Guidance at the high school level is very important and these dedicated clergy did their best to provide it. The effort put forth to get more personal with the students was greatly noted by the four classes. In a school of- over twelve-hundred students it ' s hard to remember every one and every face, but the sight of these four and what they did won ' t be long forgotten. AGADEMIGS 147

Religion Department Teachers help students search for meaning Was the pressure really on them? They had to do the work that Jesus did in the New Testament. Many times He is referred to as teacher, and so were the people in the religion department. According to chairman Miss Theresa Fretterd, the main goal of the religion department was to help guide students in developing Christian ethical moral standing to live by; to make religion meaningful no matter what students ' religions are; and to be an example of a viable Christian lifestyle. The question, however, still remains: Was the pressure really on them? The answer was yes. We (the religion teachers) feel pressure because we are dealing with a lifetime tool, said Miss Fretterd. It ' s hard to get personal with students in four years. Our philoso- phies may also be in conflict, she added. This year the Religion Depart- ment welcomed new teachers, Mr. Joe Kalwinski, Sr. Anne Marie Meagher and Father Gene Tremb- lay. They made it through a year at Newman but not without being bombarded with those ques- tions. Those questions were a reflec- tion of the curiosity of the students. The more popular questions in- volved the subjects of sex, drugs, alcohol, marriage, and capital punishment. But the teachers were trained to answer them, taking the Catholic point of view. Novel approaches to teaching were incorporated into such courses as Contemporary Moral Problems, Man ' s Search for Mean- ing, Marriage and Social Ethics. Mock weddings were conducted and students planned everything from the rehearsal to the number of children they wanted. Explosive topics such as racism, violence, revolution and war were discussed — and always with the gentle guidance of the teachers. As one student put it: You can really have good discussions. You start learn- ing things about yourself. Religion teachers were: Miss Theresa Fretterd, chairman, Fr. Robert Colter, Mrs. Jeanne Hul- lihan, Mr. Joseph Kalwinski, Sr. Anne Marie Meagher, Mrs. Mary Mook, Fr. Donald O ' Brien, Mr. Art Steffes, Mrs. Dorothy Thompson, Fr. Eugene Tremblay, and Fr. Hank Lemoncelli. ABOVE: Junior Mimi Mastics explains her junk sculpture to classmates in Man ' s Search for Meaning.
