Father Curley: He keeps things running In 1965 Cardinal Newman High School ' s south building was founded by five Oblates of Mary Immaculate, and one of these priests has seen fifteen graduating classes leave it: Supervising Principal, Reverend Frank G. Curley, O.M.I. Ordained on June 2, 1947, Father Curley began teaching at Bishop Fallon High School in Buffalo where he remained for fourteen years. He taught French, Religion, and English, and was athletic director, coaching basketball and baseball. If you can believe it, Father said, I was official bus driver for all sports. Father said that he enjoys all sports, and continues his own physical fitness routine, jogging in the afternoon and swimming whenever possible. After leaving Buffalo Father taught at Newburg Minor Seminary and the Presentation College for Nuns. He moved to Florida in 1965 and said he immediately noticed how outgoing the young people were. Father said he was surprised at how outspoken high school students were, though, adding that when he was in high school I wouldn ' t get up (and speak) publicly. He said he admires outgoing students. During Father ' s early years at Newman, he taught French, Religion, Latin and had a hard job being Dean of Students. The youth were rebelling, but our kids were good, Father commented. He and the other four Oblates were the first male teachers at Newman. Father then became assistant principal. Father claims that Newman students are the best students of any I have been associated with in my lifetime as an educator. Father said he likes to see students share their talents and expertise. In regard to an individual ' s talents, Father explained Everything comes from the soul. Father Curley goes over a memo with secretary Charlena Abdo before she types it. CENTER: Sometimes in the early morning, sometimes in the afternoon, Father Curley finds time to jog around the school grounds. 142 ACADEMICS

It was a place where teachers could let off steam, relax, or sort through that never-ending stream of paper work. %cademics: there was no way of getting around it. That ' s why you were there. Sometimes classes became secondary, however, as sports, clubs and activities received more attention. But tests and deficiency slips reminded students that studying had to take precedence over everything else, so it was back to the books. Teachers gave classrooms personalities of their own, and their effectiveness as educators was reflected in the comments from students: I dread this class, to Why do we have to study this stuff? to He can really relate to us. And always, there was the administration with its open doors, to make certain everyone remembered: education first. ACADEMICS 141
