Newspaper Staff Deadline was the word The most professional new- spaper Newman has ever had, was the comment made by faculty, administrators and parents about the SPECTRUM. And the jour- nalists responsible for it were the juniors and seniors in Ms. Karen Wedding ' s newspaper class. The staff soon learned that the production of even an eight-page newspaper involved hours of plan- ning and production, with special attention to details. Sometimes, however, the obstacles made the task seem almost impossible. Money was a problem. The new- spaper cost over $400 per issue, and advertisers were not always willing to pay for space in a school paper. As a result, the staff was able to produce only five issues. The printers were a problem. Copy arrived late, often uncorrected, thus delaying the circulation of the paper. Pictures were a problem. The staff had to borrow photo- graphs from the yearbook staff or ask Ray Piescik, junior, to take ABOVE: Bill DelGrosso, junior, became a familiar figure in the Central Office as he interviewed Dean Ken Berg for several assignments- RIGHT: Editor Adenna Dwyer, junior, critiques tfie final product. pictures and print them in his darkroom at home. Facilities were a problem. The staff used the floor to lay out the pages. But somehow the staff raised enough money, found new printers, scrounged up some pictures, and worked on the floor to produce a good issue every time. The reward? Thirty-five cents from each student who bought a paper which was used to pay for the next edition. And, oh yes, the pleasure of seeing that byline. Yearbook Staff They took you behind the scenes It is said that a picture speaks a thousand words, and in essence that is what the yearbook does. This year, however, it was different. In spite of the headaches, heated arguments, and critical deadlines, the staff created on a new type of AC- COLADE. Copy played a major part in the book telling the stories behind the pictures. Captions, too, offered additional information as well as identified the people in the pictures. The staff went behind the scenes to show the underdogs, overa- chievers, problems, triumphs and defeats behind the events that were covered throughout the year. This was done in hopes that the average student would be represented fairly in the book. The changes were due mainly to the journalistic experience of the new moderator, Ms. Karen Wedding. I wanted to emphasize to my students that putting a yearbook together required more than just slapping pictures on a page. I know sometimes I drove them up the wall with my demands for perfection, but I felt that the idea that journalism classes are all fun and games should be correct- ed. Credit also should be given to all staff members, reporters, patrons, editor Genevieve Cleary, and the photography club for assisting the staff photographers. Basically the staff learned the concepts of produc- ing a quality amateur publication As one member, Monica Michael stated, There were many conflicts and problems but the end result was reached — a good book.
