Backgammon Plus Club Playing with logic Like the Chess Club, the Backgammon Plus Club centered around competition. Moderator, Mrs. Sandra Burlingame said, The purpose of the club is to have fun, to build skills in backgammon and other mind-building games, and to sharpen mental and logic skills. Previously called the Backgammon Club, members changed the name to Backgammon Plus Club because in addition to backgammon the club played such games as Master Mind, Touchee, and Othello. Newspaper Staff Deadline was the word The most professional new- spaper Newman has ever had, was the comment made by faculty, administrators and parents about the SPECTRUM. And the jour- nalists responsible for it were the juniors and seniors in Ms. Karen Wedding ' s newspaper class. The staff soon learned that the production of even an eight-page newspaper involved hours of plan- ning and production, with special attention to details. Sometimes, however, the obstacles made the task seem almost impossible. Money was a problem. The new- spaper cost over $400 per issue, and advertisers were not always willing to pay for space in a school paper. As a result, the staff was able to produce only five issues. The printers were a problem. Copy arrived late, often uncorrected, thus delaying the circulation of the paper. Pictures were a problem. The staff had to borrow photo- graphs from the yearbook staff or ask Ray Piescik, junior, to take ABOVE: Bill DelGrosso, junior, became a familiar figure in the Central Office as he interviewed Dean Ken Berg for several assignments- RIGHT: Editor Adenna Dwyer, junior, critiques tfie final product. pictures and print them in his darkroom at home. Facilities were a problem. The staff used the floor to lay out the pages. But somehow the staff raised enough money, found new printers, scrounged up some pictures, and worked on the floor to produce a good issue every time. The reward? Thirty-five cents from each student who bought a paper which was used to pay for the next edition. And, oh yes, the pleasure of seeing that byline.
