Chess Club Checkmate! The Chess Club encouraged mental competition, mental disci- pline, and sportsmanship. The King ' s Rook Chess Club, affiliated with the United States Chess Federation, was sponsored by Father Don O ' brien, who is one of seventy-five American chess Mas- ters. The Chess Club held weekly meetings to compete with each other at monthly rated tournaments which encouraged Newman ' s chess wizards to compete with other school districts. At Newman there were several choral groups all under the supreme direction of Mrs. Ann Hoyt. The groups consisted of the Boys and Girls Mixed Chorus, the Sunshine Girls, the Girls Ensemble, and the Girls Quartet. These music groups performed at other schools around the area as well as at various homes for the elderly. They also entertained parents at the Home and School meetings. During the Christmas season the Sunshine Girls performed at Bur- dine ' s and all the choral groups made a special performance for the New- man students and faculty. Backgammon Plus Club Playing with logic Like the Chess Club, the Backgammon Plus Club centered around competition. Moderator, Mrs. Sandra Burlingame said, The purpose of the club is to have fun, to build skills in backgammon and other mind-building games, and to sharpen mental and logic skills. Previously called the Backgammon Club, members changed the name to Backgammon Plus Club because in addition to backgammon the club played such games as Master Mind, Touchee, and Othello.
