Social Action Club Lending a hand The Social Action Club was composed of a small group of individuals organized for the pur- pose of helping those in their community. The first activity they participated in was a Halloween pediatric ward party held at Good Samaritan Hospital. They also distributed small bags of candy to the teachers for Halloween to save them from the mad trick-or-treating rush. Their projects for November included a visit to the Pennsylvania Hotel to dance with the elderly and just talk to them. And of course, there was always the canned food drive for the poor during Thanks- giving. In December, the Social Action Club members ran frantically to the lunchroom, homeroom, (and even class) selling delicious chocolate Santa Clauses. The earthquake victims in Italy also benefited from the Social Action Club ' s dedication through the warm clothes and blankets the members collected. Other activities the Social Action Club performed were a party for the retarded children at the tVlarian School, help with the Red Cross, and participation in March of Dimes Under the guidance of Miss Terry Fretterd the Social Action Club lived up to its name and served the community in a variety of ways. The officers, Beth Bonnell, president, Lyn Fitzgerald, vice- president, Tina Paine, secretary, and Irene Garcia, treasurer, also worked very hard to keep the club unified and organized. President, Beth Bonnell, said, I believe the Social Action Club serves a definite purpose which is different from every other club ' s at Newman. I really hope this club is at Newman for a long time because it ' s important to think of helping others and of doing good deeds for the less fortunate rather than thinking of yourself. Pep Club Their spirit was contagious Two bits, four bits, six bits a dollar, all for Pep Club stand up and holler! Where would Newman ' s spirit be without the Pep Club? The roof-raising pep rallies would turn into silent cheers. The football players wouldn ' t have huge artistical- ly designed signs to bust through. Spirit would just reach an all time low. The Pep club, led by moderator, Miss Terry Fretterd, was the group that painted all those signs for the games and pep rallies. Aha! That ' s where they came from. Therefore, the Pep Club members were the leaders and promoters of school spirit all year. And once they got everyone started, no one could stop!
