National Forensics League Speaking with class The National Forensic League was an organization devoted to teacliing the fine art of persuasive and entertaining speech. The club ' s activities included speech competi- tion with other schools in the categories of Oratory, Dramatic and Humorous Interpretations, Impromtu speaking, and Extemporanious speaking which dealt with current events. Also, Newman hosted Student Congress which included political debates and parliamentary procedure. The NFL squad traveled to Tallahassee in November for the Florida State Student Congress and to St. Petersburg in April for the State tournament in individual events. The NFL members were also responsible for broadcasting the daily announcements in school. Cathy Lynch, president of the club said, The NFL is a great learning experience and more importantly, a lot of fun. Fellowship of Christian Athletes Getting together for Christ One of the newer clubs at Newman was the Fellowship of Christian Athletes which, within two years, became one of the more popular clubs. President John Kerns explained why when he stated, It gives the members a chance to relate how Christ is involved in our everyday exper- iences, mainly in sports. Pat Sweeney, vice-president, added, The meetings are fun because they are outside of school, but there is also a time for serious- ness. These factors were the fundamental reasons for the club ' s success.
