Clubs Behind the scenes: STUDENT COUNCIL 110 EXCHANGE CLUB 120 INITIATION 122 SOCIAL ACTION 126 Freshmen Joene Bova, Michelle Bryson and Jill Zook, members of the Pep Club, painted a Ruffle the Eagles banner which helped cheer the team on to victory. wlubs were the chief way of getting involved, and Newman had a variety to choose from. Club activities included car washes, playing chess and backgammon, conducting a mock Presidential election and competing in speech tournaments and drama contests. There was even a club to organize the clubs! Members found ways to make fund raising fun: everything from frustration pencils, carnations and warm fuzzies to chocolate pumpkins, Santa Claus heads and submarine sandwiches. Whether the clubs were created to perform social services for the community or just to gather with friends and have fun, they were an excellent source of bringing people together. CLUBS 109

student Council It was the perfect link They were the people who organized Activities Day so students could find what different clubs had to offer. They also sponsored the Blood Drive and set up Intramural Sports. They were the ones who headed the Tardy Review Board which listened to the excuses of students who weren ' t known for punctuality and decided whether or not they should be excused. They also maintained a scholarship fund for students, and opened a student body office for the purpose of airing students ' com- plaints. These people were the members of the Student Council, and their interests were geared toward the student body. Each homeroom elected a repre- sentative who was responsible for relaying any complaints or sugges- tions from students to the officers, who in turn presented them to the administration. The Student Council strove to be the perfect link between students and the administration in all school related matters , explained Mary Pat Hoffman, vice-president. Formerly, the Student Council was recognized solely for its spring raffle. Students dreaded the day their Student Council represenative ap- peared at the front of the room with a large manila envelope and called their names to come up and take their quotas ' worth. Such remarks as, Oh no, not again! Who is doing this to us? and What is the money for anyway? were repeated again and again. According to Father Frank Curley, the money collected from a raffle was put toward the school to pay for various materials and ex- penses to keep the school operating. This years ' Student Council served as a transition for the future role that the Student Council will play in future years, remarked President Robert Rockwell. Without the Student Council, there would have been a huge gap in communication between students and the adminis- tration. The members of the Student Council were: A. Alonzi, T. Kerns, K. Lewis, M. Goodman, C. Lee, P. Curran, S. Mayer, K. Richardson, T. Dudan, T. GreenAwood, T. Thomason, M. Budnyk, R. Bogani, M. Almida, K. Andres, T. Kraft, A. Titzel, D. Fuller, T. Mayes, M. Koteff, P.
