Athletes find a sport for all seasons Getting up in the morning, going to school, doing homework, and partying on the weel end was the routine for most Newman students, but there were those who found time to practice and compete in sports not associated with school. Although the workouts and competitions were different, each of these athletes was dedicated to the perfection of his or her sport. Practice occurred before and after school. At sunrise brothers Jimmy and Matt McGrath would catch a few early morning waves before going to school. Jimmy said, You have to practice whenever there are waves. Late night practices were not uncommon for gymnasts Stephanie Kehr, freshman, and Marie Egan, junior. Their vigorous three hour work outs ended at 9:30 p.m. each night, plus Saturday afternoons. Most of these athletes were introduced to their sports by friends. ABOVE: Stephanie Kehr, freshman, is an example of perfection in motion. Nancy Groth, sophomore, said she started riding horses six years ago because her sisters used to ride. Michelle Zakrzewski, senior, began arm wrestling because of her dad ' s influence, but Matt McGrath ' s was a different story. He started surfing one day and just couldn ' t stop. No matter what got them interested they have all become competitors. In the past year Jimmy McGrath participated in national and world- wide competitions. Among his adven- tures, he traveled to North Carolina and Puerto Rico. Stephanie and Marie flipped and flopped in many state competitions and the National Junior Olympics. Bike rider Mike Cleary, junior, and skateboarder, Steve Marinak, junior, participated in smaller competitions although they are just as dedicated as Newman ' s national athletes. 102 SPORTS
