And, So, she took a ring from her finger and placed it in his hands. There was a wit in a man neither young nor old: but a wit full of an old man's wis- dom and of a child's wisdom. and, then, in a moment it was no more. And, so she took a ring from her finger and placed it in his hands. There was a man marked with the scars of his love of country,, a body active with the surge of a life far, far from spent and, in a moment, it was no more. And so, she took a ring from her finger and placed it in his hands. There was a father' with a little boy, a little girl and a joy of each in the other. In a moment it was no more, and so she took a ring from her finger and placed it ln his hands. There was a husband who asked much and gave much, and, out of the giving and the asking, wove with a wom- an what could not be broken in life, and, in a moment it was no more. And so, she took a ring from her finger and placed it in his hands, and kissed him and closed the lid of a coffin. A piece of each of us died at that moment. Yet, in death he gave himself to us. He gave us of good heart from which the laughten came. He gave us of a pro- found wit, from which a great leadership emerged. He gave us of a kindness and a strength fused into human courage to seek peace without fear. He gave us of his love that we, too, in turn. might give. He gave that we might give of ourselves, that we might give to one another until there would be no room, no room at all, for the bigotry, the hatred, prejudice and the arrogance which converged in that moment of horror to strike him down. In leaving us-these gifts, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, President of the United States, leaves with us. Will we take them, Mr. President? Will we have, now, the sense and the responsibility and the courage to take them? Slain by Sniper Un Downtown Street in Dallas Presidents Body lies In While House WASHINGTON KUPD -- The body of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, lay in repose today in the East Room of the White House. A gray Navy ambulance car- ried the body of the slain Chief Executive from Bethesda Naval Hospital through the streets of the nation's capital in the dark hours before dawn. Hundreds watched in silence as the am- bulance entered the White House gate. Behind closed curtains, with him in death as in life, was his young wife, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, heavy laden with the burden of her grief. She was still wearing the pink suit she wore in Dallas Friday. Six Military Pallbearers Accompanied by the Presi- dent's brother, Atty. Gen. Rob- ert F. Kennedy, she walked be- hind the six military pallbear- ers who carried the flag-draped coffin into the East Room of the White House. The casket was placed on a catafalque in the center of the room. A military honor guard took up its position and two priests knelt to pray the night through for Kennedy, the na- tion's first Roman Catholic President. .Ic1ckK enned y ls Buried Un ArIingtonHill WASHINGTON IAPJ - A mourning nation buried John F. Kennedy today on an open hillside sacred with history after a formal farewell from statesmen, country- men and family. The youthful President, who sought peace in an age of hot and cold wars, finds his own peace beside the nation's he- roes in Arlington National Cem- etery-in a grave overlooking the memorial of another mar- tyred president, Abraham Lin- coln. But with the prayers for the dead there were hopes for the new President, Lyndon B. John- son, who briefly laid aside the awesome problems he inherited to lead 26 presidents, prime ministers and kings in paying respect to the assassinated Ken- nedy. Not since the burial of the Unknown Soldier 40 years ago has there been such a gather- ing in Washington. And many, if not all, of the 100 or so dignitaries-including French President Charles de Gaulle, Prince Phillip and Prime Minister Alec Douglas- Home of Britain, Chancellor 'A' 'A' :I Ludwig Erhard of West Ger- many joined the grieving Mrs. Kennedy in a sombre proces- sion behind the horse-drawn caisson bearing Kennedy's body to St. Matthew's Roman Cath- olic Cathedral. The low pontififical mass was celebrated by Richard Car- dinal Cushing, archbishop of Boston and an old friend of the Kennedy family. Because of the space limita- tions, only those with invita- tions were allowed up the 13 steps and into the dark-red brick church. But in a moving display of sorrow and affection, Ameri- cans mighty and humble paid their respects to their slain leader by the hundreds of thou- sands. They choked the sidewalks- along Pennsylvania Avenue and flooded the capitol grounds Sim- tContinued on page 5-Bl. Col. We have endeavored to record all the events of our last year at Cardinal Mooney, which are now memories to cherish, We would like to express our gratitude to all who have helped us publish this yearbook, and especially to Sister William Marie who has been our advisor, This annual has been ours for a year - now it is yours for a lifetime, ',ZxJEditor Assistant Editor i13l m, . It is with deep gratitude that we, the Seniors of 1964, dedicate the Prince to our parents, our teachers and our friends-Q11 of whom are responsible for the fact that we are seniors graduating from Cardi- nal Mooney High School. For twelve years we have been enriched steadily from their store of love and knowledgeg now we take our place in the world in the capacity of givers. St. Paul speaks for us. When I was a child I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child. Now that I have become a man I have put away the things of a childf, This sense of an end and a beginning permeates our annual. It is our earnest hope that our lives-not iust this book-will be the real expression of the gratitude we feel. MORAN PRESIDENT November 27, 1963 My Dear Graduates: Let us thank God that He makes us live among is no longer permitted to anyone to be mediocref, Pope Pius XI, sum up the future goals and trials the present problems. It These words, spoken by of the modern graduate. Mediocrity has forever lost its place in our society-it has been replaced by the demand for excellence in leadership-morally, physically and mentally. You are entering the world of adulthood. You are the future leaders of a world that cries out for peace and tranquility. As true leaders, then, you may expect a lifetime of emulation and envy-reward and punishment. When you set the standard for the whole world, your reward is widespread recognition. Your punishment? You become a target for fierce denial, depreciation, detraction and envy. However, if your standard is merely mediocre, you will be severely left alone. No one will strive to surpass or to slander you unless your standard be stamped with the seal of genius. And do not forget, in accomplishing your goals, that success is measured only in terms of spiritual and not worldly riches, for, in the words of Our Saviour, XVhat doth it profit a man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his own soul?', Your soul is a pearl of great price. Lose it and you have lost the game of life. Resolve now, dear graduates, that your plan of life will center on the saving of your soul for God. Select your career, your profession, your future state in life, with this thought in mind, Here is the path that, for me, leads to Codf, And may that path of yours be carpeted with velvet and lit by the eternal radiance of heavenly stars. For weeks, Christmas carols could be heard throughout t he school during enrichment per- iod. Finally, on December 18, after second period, the entire student body assembled in the gymnasium for the program. After the assembly was open- ed by master of ceremonies, Tim Wilson, Santa C l a u s fportrayed by Mike Cibsonj dropped in to pay a visit on his way through Sarasota. Then Santa presented each member of the Clee Club with a little present. After all the members had opened their gifts, which turned out to be small bells of various descrip- tions, the singing was opened with ulingle Bellsf' The choir's entire repertoire was excel- lently accompained by Do- reen Ludwig at the piano. In fancy clothes and high spirits they took off after school for Tampa's Las Noveda- des. The restaurant was a per- fect atmosphere for the belab- ored students to practice two hard years of Spanish. I COUGAR CUFF NOTES Ann 1 I QQ QE5 . ' - .. .- KUIHP2 - 'A-e Even before arriving at th e restaurant there was much fun on the road. Four cars filled to the seams with laughing, sing- ing people hit the road and maintained a continuous song fest all the way from Sarasota to Tampa. Once there, some of the stu- dents, those in the car of Senor Oscar Rodriguez went to a Span- ish cafe for Cuban coffee, and others walked a bit, enjoying the sights of Ybor City. The Sarasota people were joined at the restaurant by Father Miguel Garcia and his Spanish class- es from Bishop Barry in St. Pe- 1 l l l beginning to end. Father Gar- cia sang and Senor Rodriguez sang and two guitars played on and on to the laughing and clap- .ping of the thoroughly enchant- ed group. A real highlight of the evening was the dancing of a senorita named Linda. Clicking Castanets A friend of Senor Rodriguez danced in Spanish costume. The clicking castanets fitted in well with the rest of the evening. l i The only exception to the Spanish evening was a gay in- terlude of Irish American songs jplayed by Cardinal Mooney's Father James Crotty. The danc- ing and singing and eating and enjoyment went on into the far night, until the group sadly broke up at midnight. No men- tion of the evening would be lcomplete without thanking the men who accompanied the stu- ldents: Fathers Foynes, Crotty, lGarcia, Ruiz, Cortez, and Senor Rodriguez. j Most of all though, everyone ffrom Sarasota wants to say a g Muchas Gracias, Padre, to jFather Victorio Aguera, who en- labled us to go to Tampa, and jwho taught us the Spanish that Qenabled us to talk after we got lthere. The evening was anoth- fer of the memories we will al- lways remember from out last year at Cardinal Mooney.
