nineteen The first vote for reorganization, in February, 1957, failed to carry. Undaunted, the steering committee made revisions in their plan and set a second vote for May 7, 1957. The Cardinal Community School District came into being when this vote passed overwhelmingly. The merger combined nineteen smaller districts into one, covering four counties. The newly-elected school board which took office were Floyd Harmon from Eldon, Lowell Giltner from the northern part of the rural area, Clifford Moore from the southern part of the rural area, Lloyd Whitham from the Agency area and Max Willhoit from the Batavia area. Mr. Willhoit was named president of the board at their organizational meeting. One of the board s first duties was to select a superintendent. After carefully screening a large number of applicants, Robert F. Leland, superintendent of schools at Paton, was chosen. Another of the original board's activities was to select a name for the new district. Many suggestions were offered, but the board chose Cardinal Community Schools because of its meaning, which is chief and first. After advancing through the 60s and '70s, Cardinal now hopefully enters the '80s. The district has progressed and improved in the past 20 years, but even though its outer appearance has changed, the Cardinal Community School District remains dedicated to its original goal — to give students the very best education possible. The U.S. government has declared Dogpatch the most unnecessary place of all, but a strange potion with unexplainable powers could be the key to saving the town. Abner Yokum's Yokumberry Tonic, which turns plain, puny males into towering musclemen, is the only thing delaying the evacuation and bombing of Dogpatch. Abner plans to donate the tonic to the government, but the villainous General Bullmoose plots to steal the formula and kill him. Meanwhile, Daisy Mae is trying to marry the uninterested Abner. Earthquake McGoon then makes a shady deal with Daisy. He thwarts Bullmoose's evil plans and saves Abner's life, so she consents to marry McGoon. Suddenly, government scientists make an incredible discovery — Abner's tonic causes its drinkers to become totally uninterested in women. The government resumes its bombing plans. But during McGoon's and Daisy's wedding ceremony, a plaque is found in a statue of General Cornpone in which Abraham Lincoln declares Dogpatch a national shrine, and Pappy finds a romanticizing potion that reverses the ill effects of Yokumberry Tonic. Abner becomes romantic and marries Daisy, and the town is saved from being bombed. BY DRAMA. (Left:) The Sadie Hawkins Day race begins! In corners of the gym were romantic settings, such as a park bench and a love seat, both surrounded with live plants furnished by Ostranders Flowers in Eldon. (Right:) Laurie and Brooke carry supplies to aid Father in his return to health. Little Women, a play based on the novel by Louisa Alcott, was presented Friday, March 13 in the Cardinal gymnasium. The production went off well, as the experienced cast was able to overcome the evil portent of the date. In a rarity for Cardinal drama, Little Women is a serious play. In a manner almost worthy of a soap opera, it tells the story of the March family and the ups and downs of the sisters Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth. Ted Laurence, better known as Laurie, wants to marry Jo. Wait a minute! No, he doesn't — Amy is the one he loves. John Brooke weds Meg, but rich Old Aunt March disapproves, and may withhold Meg's inheritance. Father March, serving as chaplain to the Union soldiers, becomes sick and has to return home to recuperate. Hold on! There's more. Jo works hard to become a successful writer. Little Beth, loved by all, contracts a mysterious disease and finally dies. Then the German professor Fritz Bhaer arrives and steals Jo's heart. The strength of family ties and their power over life's trials is the story of Little Women. LITTLE WOMEN (Left:) The cast of Little Women. FOR PROM (Right:) 1981 PROM KING AND QUEEN CANDIDATES: Mark McCleary, Roxanne Crossmon, Kevin Williams, Cindy Thompson, Mike Roberts, Diane Wright, Richard Warren, Becky Bonser, Rob Moore, Carla Bennett. Sailing was the theme of the 1980-81 Junior-Senior Prom held May 2 in the Cardinal High School gym. Small boats with the names of the couples decorated the walls, while a lighthouse stood in the center of the floor. Music for the dance was provided by Northwind, with former Cardinal student Harold Clark on drums. Midway through the night's activities came the crowning of the prom royalty, chosen by the performing band. Cindy Thompson was crowned queen and Mark McCleary was selected as king. Graduation ceremonies for Cardinal students began with baccalaureate on Sunday night, May 17 in the high school gym. Reverend Ron Clayton gave the sermon on a New Beginning and Old Routines. The brass choir section and the chamber choir performed musical selections. On May 18 the seniors graduated when commencement was held. Mr. T.E. Lyon gave the address with a humorous speech about Some Terribly Important Irrelevancies. The brass choir section and mixed chorus provided music for the ceremony, then school board president George Kayser handed out the diplomas to each senior. A shaking of hands, a turn of the jassel, and high school life became part of the past. (Left:) Chris Leedom receives a handshake and a diploma from Mr. Kayser.
