(Right): Joe Shipley, Custodian (Far Right): Clyde Lunkley, Custodian 36 Cardinal Cross-Country Boys cross-country had a very good season with outstanding running from Senior Don Riley who placed eleventh in state competition. The cross-country team was a lot stronger this year, with beginning Freshmen Doug Yochum and John Riley adding to the success of the team. The highlight for the season was eighth place for the varsity cross-country team in the state meet. Girls cross-country had a definite im- provement over last year with Junior Regina Yochum qualifying for state. However, because of the small squad the girl's cross-country season was still a disappointing one. (Right): Junior Regina Yochum runs the cross-country trail. Miss Green conducts the chorus during rehearsal seventh hour. 70 Homecoming 1979 The presentation of the King and Queen and the class attendants was announced Thursday night with Brian Fenton, officiating as Master of Ceremonies. 1979 Homecoming King, Lacey Fligg, was presented the Traditional Homecoming red and white victory football. Senior, Denise Cline, was crowned Queen to reign over the festivities by last year's Queen, Jana Epperson. As queen, Denise was presented a bouquet of red roses. A new look was added to the halftime festivities this year, as the King and Queen and the class attendants were driven onto the football field in cars to be presented to the community and student body. The traditional decorating of the halls began the exciting week of Homecoming. The halls were judged Thursday night before the bonfire with the Juniors placing first. The winning theme was A KICK IN THE PAST WITH THE JUNIOR CLASS ' The hall was decorated with blue and pink streamers and featured things to represent- ing the childhood of the nine Juniors on the varsity football team. The Sophomores finished second with the theme of BURY THE WARRIORS , Freshmen placed third with the theme of CARDINAL HALL OF FAME , and Seniors took fourth with TAKE OUT THE WARRIORS. The Seniors took first place in the wood haul for the bonfire with 128 truckloads. The Juniors took second. Sophomores, third and Freshmen fourth. The bonfire assembly featured a variety of skits to help raise the spirit of victory. Skits were present by the Junior Class, the Band, Student Council, J.V. Cheerleaders, and the Varsity Cheerleaders. After the skits, the 1979 Homecoming King and Queen were crowned and reigned over the Homecoming bonfire. A false ceiling of red and white streamers, together with paper hearts decorating the walls, complet- ed the romantic atmosphere of the Sweetheart Ball. A 83 Fine Arts Night Draws Crowd Fine Arts Night at Cardinal provides the opportunity for parents to visit with teachers and see what students are doing in their classes.
