The annual staff of Cardinal High School presents The 1974 Cardinal Comet Editor............................Willa Martin Advisor......................Mr. Daniel J. Cox Mr. Eugene Nasalroad We, the annual staff, present to you the 1974 CARDINAL COMET in ap- preciation for your outstanding work during your years at Cardinal. We hope you will have many fond memories of the past years and that you enjoy looking through this yearbook as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you. 3 9 7 Table of contents Administration, Faculty, Staff ......................................9-15 Seniors.............................................................16-25 Juniors.............................................................26-29 Sophomores..........................................................30-32 Organizations.......................................................34-41 Music...............................................................42-45 Sports..............................................................46-59 Awards..............................................................62-63 Baccalaureate..........................................................64 Commencement...........................................................65 Senior Directory....................................................66-71 Ads.................................................................73-82 8 (L TO R) William Maynard; David Fenton, v. pres.; Severd Johnson, pres.; Eugene Nasalroad; Ivan Peters; Christine Stevenson, sec.; Wilmer Schewe (NOT PICTURED); Faye Wells, treas. Superintendent and Board of Education have busy year With the board mulling over the new building and next year’s grades changing, this year was one of their busiest. Interviewing applicants for positions in the school system, the board members decisions had to be accurate and precise. When problems arose they were there to straighten them up and get things back to normal. To them, making a decision was like healing a wound, thinking; would a bandage be enough or does it need stitches? No one promises a wound will heal without a scar, but the problems Cardinal faced were healed by some of the finest people in our community. It would take a thousand and one years to thank each of them properly but the best way we know today is just to say Thank you all. and a job well done. Mr. Roberts brings new look to Cardinal Mr. Terry Roberts graduated from Iowa State University with a B. S. degree in 1961 and a Master's in 1964. After his Master's, Mr. Roberts got his first years of experience from George, Iowa as an English teacher and a coach. Moving on, he taught five years in Corning, Iowa, three years as high school and junior high school principal in Macena, Iowa before moving to Cardinal. From Mr. Nasalroad's point of view, Mr. Roberts is “just what the doctor ordered.” Mr. Nasalroad said I have the utmost respect for him, I’m satisfied with him and think he is a tremendous asset to Cardinal. Mr. Roberts thinks that Cardinal has tremendous potential that will come out next year with the new facilities and the moving in of the ninth grade. 10 Cardinal personnel keep the ball rolling Mrs. Miriam Thomann. nurse Mr. Dennis Nelson, counselor Mr. Jack Sullivan, Special Needs Mr. Loren Red Burnett. This year was adventure-filled and exciting. With seniors coming and going, the school year was always jumping. The events during the year were few but en- joyable. Pleasure was just a part of the year. Many controversial issues arose. Feelings were hurt, friends were lost, and people were disap- pointed but there’s one thing that should be remembered, it’ll all happen again, maybe not in the near future but one of these days when you think life is sweet it’ll turn on you and before you know it everything that you have ever worked for will be washed away. People will keep on living, time will be lost and fame will be won. The ups and downs of life will have faced us all, some will endure and others will fall, but, if we can remember that in high school self-respect, discipline, and honesty were some of the key things that pulled us through, we will have lived a full and happy life. Willa Martin Editor 25 Preparing for the prom, the Junior class held bake sales, sponsored a benefit basketball game between the faculty and the KBIZ-KTVO All-Stars, and made Christmas candles to sell and increase their treasury. The class officers for this year were Lin- da Boyd, president; Mark Briner, vice- president; Bee Taylor, secretary; Jo Ellen Payne, treasurer. Jack Sullivan was the faculty advisor this year. With a staff of six students and umpteen activities these students have done their best to bring those of you who chose not to attend the various activities for some reason or the other close-up action shots of the highlights of each activity. Those students who gave their time taking and developing pictures were; David Ludwig, Mike Farley, Hank Hofsteter, Rita Meyers, David Turpin and David Israel. From the students and faculty at Cardinal - Thank You Camera Club . A special thanks is not enough to express our gratitude and appreciation to the man who made this yearbook have photos, he. Jack Sullivan is the only person I know who got tough when the tough got going. 35 Willa Martin Editor SEATED LEFT TO RIGHT: Brian Phillips. Wayne Dailey. Merry Noel. Treasurer; Chuck Huffman. Enthusiasm and concentration were some of the key contributions to such fine art. Fine arts night at Cardinal was held on May 13. Many students and art club members received high honors from a select group of judges. Mr. Craft, Cardinal’s art instructor also played a large part. Being patient and understanding is very important in teaching art, and without these qualifications art at Cardinal just wouldn't have been. 39 (1ST ROW LEFT TO RIGHT) Wayne Dailey. Jim Pumphrey. This play was about a man who was retarded from childbirth. He had an operation which gave him the ability to act and speak as a normal person would. But soon after this he slowly regresses. The faculty sponsors were Miss Cheryl Hostetler and Mrs. Czerwinski. 40 Library assistance (STANDING) Terri Cook, Van Ritz, (SEATED) Lois Berndt, Mrs. Mitchell, Chris Thomann, Slice Brewington. The Library Assistance members are the only people who meet at least once a day. During the year the group has put its best efforts forward in helping other students and faculty members find the book that they need by using the card file which is most complete and up to date. Mrs. Mitchell the librarian and sponsor of this group, has been very helpful and spent countless hours bringing Cardinal's library the finest research and reading books printed. These two speak for themselves. 41 Cardinal High School Marching Band (1ST RANK LEFT TO RIGHT) Elaine Shartzer. Robben Franklin. Ed VanderLinden-Director, Mary Marts. Cindy Bride At a Cardinal football game, at a basket- ball game, or even in a parade the Cardinal high school marching band could be recognized by the very modern and popular sounds of today. Under the direction of Ed VanderLinden, the band has won many awards and honors. At the Blackhawk Music Festival held at Tri- County, Cardinal’s band was among the best. In April Mr. VanderLinden took several groups to the State music contest at Mediapolis. They won high awards in the per- cussion and instrumental sections. 42 Cardinal High twirlers and drum majorette I Cardinal high school’s band was led by a very pretty and talented senior. Deb Emry. Deb was chosen drum majorette because of her potential to do a good job, as you can see she has all the qualifications. Behind her were three equally talented and pretty twirlers who added a flair to the band and per- formed well. Valerie Reinier, Mary Conrad and Mary Fronczak, who are all seniors, were twirlers for the 1973-74 school year. 43 Chorus (FIRST ROW L TO R) Beatty Clark. Becky Potts. Valerie Reiner. Cardinal girls had a very fine season this year. Led by senior Elaine Moore, the Comettes es- tablished a new meet record of 5-1. Also, they were Blackhawk Conference Champions, placing fourth at District and twenty-fifth at State. The Comettes dethroned Pekin in the Conference meet with Elaine Moore placing first, Regina Fronczak third, Becky Taylor sixth, Kathy Johnson seventh and Dianne McCarroll twelfth. These five girls also made the District and State lineup. The Comettes were FIRST ROW FROM L TO R; Celia Riley, Barb Trembly, Regina Fronczak, and Linda Boyd. SECOND ROW; Jo Payne, Becky Taylor, Diane McCarroll, Cathy Johnson, Elaine Moore, and Denny Nelson, coach. Cardinal girls cross country Becky Taylor Elaine Moore Regina Fronczak Diane McCarroll Cardinal girls’ basketball This year Cardinal was coached by Mr. Richard Dugan and assisted by Miss Joyce Berlin. (FIRST ROW. L TO R) Kelly Blankenship. Jo Payne. Terri Boyd. Linda Boyd. Deanna Thomann. Bee Taylor. (SECOND ROW) Manager: Chris Thomann. Dawn Manning. Sandy Gottman. Terri Blankenship. Elaine Moore, Bee Terrell. Manager: Kim Menning. It was a very frustrating and disappointing year for girls' basketball until tournament time. Most of the frustrations were found in the ten games that were lost by seven points or less. However, the girls didn't give up as shown in tournament play. They finished runnerup to Van Buren in the sec- tional and lost a closely contested game to Ottumwa in semi-finals at district. FOUR SENIORS: Terri Boyd, Becky Terrell, Elaine Moore, and Terri Blankenship, will be great- ly missed. However, with letterwinners Sandy Gottman, Becky Taylor, Linda Boyd, and Deanna Thomann returning, girls' basketball at Cardinal is looking up. Special awards this year for the Blackhawk Conference went to Elaine Moore, second team all- conference; Becky Terrell, honorable mention; and Terri Blankenship, honorable mention. Upon his arrival, the football team had more losses than wins. Through his hard-driving enthusiasm and leadership they became a winning football team. In the '69-70 season the team finished third in the conference, losing to Van Buren and Waco. In 70-71 the team finished second, losing only to Waco. In the 71-72 season the team took revenge on Waco and beat them to become first in the conference and ninth in the state. “Red” was selected one of the two top Courierland coaches of the year as a result of this season’s record. In the 72-73 season the team was second in the conference, again losing only to Waco. “Red's” last year was an instant replay with Waco again holding them to second in the conference. “Red leaves Cardinal with an astonishing record of 27 wins and 8 losses. The desire to be a winning team is always there but you have to have someone like “Red” Burnett to put it all together to make that team click and become winners. He leaves here with comments, “I wish all the boys all the luck. Cardinal wrestling (1ST ROW L TO R) Bill Acton. Curt Heemsbergen (2ND Randy Kern. Jeff Johnson. Rick Liles.
