The 1970 Cardinal Comet CARDINAL COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL ELDON, IOWA MARCIA BRUNS, Editor DEDICATION Mrs. Sadler, A Person Who Really Cared. Forewords For his work and guidance, I would like to personally thank the sponsor of this annual, Mr. Tom Braunger. His spirit, attitude, and ideas were shared by the entire staff and inspired us to do our work as best we could. Twelve students devoted their extra time, including Saturdays and Sundays, to this annual. Without their hard work and co-operation, it would not have been possible. We, the annual staff, present the 1970 Cardinal Comet as a remembrance of the past year. As you read through its pages, we hope you will relive the happiness and sorrow, the victor- ies and defeats, and the memories of things you have done and the friendships you have known. Recall them now with us as we leaf through these memory-filled pages together. Marcia Bruns, Main Editor The beauty of sponsoring the Cardinal Annual is in the staff you work with. These were only twelve individuals who shaped eighteen issues of the school newspaper and put out the annual. These two publications require so much work in so many areas: editing, composition, photography, developing, layouts, ad campaigns, proof-reading, and most im- portant of all, creativity. My special thanks go to Mr. Chisman, the professional photographer who helped us so, and Principal Johnson, who allowed us a free run in our ideas. But my everlasting gratitude goes to Marcia Bruns, our main editor, for her inspiring work. Join us as we travel through the school year of 1969-1970 at Cardinal High School. Mr. Braunger This definitely was a year for great achievements. The United States landed men on the moon; Cardinal came out with a good annual. We are extremely grateful to Marcia Bruns for getting us over troubled waters, to Mr. Chisman's professional touch in photography, and to Mr. Johnson for his invigorating help. Mike Penrod, Mark Bowden, Deena Cooper, Gary Whitting- ton, Robert Schindler, Ken Starkweather, Alana Rogers, Cindi Swanson, Robert Conrad, Ann Kent, Dana Bradfield. S. Maynard, President Severd Johnson Lura Miller Schews (absent) 6 Superintendent Nasalroad has been here for two years, receiving his M, S. Degree from Drake university and nis Spec. Degree from the Uni- versity of Nebraska. His future plans include making Cardinal one of the better schools in this part of the state. A sad note on our administrative page is the leaving of Mr. John- son from Cardinal after an out- standing two years. The aspects of Cardinal that he has enjoyed the most have been the friendly and responsive staff at Cardinal High School. I have been par- ticularly pleased to have had the services of an outstanding secre- tary, Mrs. Stevenson. The pretty woman with the deep tan is Mrs. Dallner, secretary to the Board of Educa- tion. Educated at Ottumwa Heights she has been an efficient secretary for the last thir- teen years. The beloved friend of everyone, Chris, in her own sweet way, makes the school run smoothly. The beautiful backbone of the superinten- dent's office, Mrs. Pumphrey has been an attractive secretary for the past three years. 7 FACULTY The reason for the big band sound at Cardinal is the maestro, Mr. Ruby. Incorporated with the school in 1957, Mr. Ruby conducts the marching band, concert band, solos, and small ensembles. Mrs. Newell is the author of the delicious smells of baking products and the reason the faculty is so well fed. She is enjoying a Florida retirement right now. In her galley, Mrs. Mitchell reviews and reviews and reviews library books. Our literary guide runs a well-managed library staff. Sounds of music are heard daily from Mr. McClain's vocal music room. A top professional in his field, he has become a musical institution at Cardinal. 9 A handsome addition to the faculty at Cardinal, Mr. Thomas has been a marvelous inspiration to the boys in basketball and physical education. Current plans seem to be an administrative host in an elementary school next year. Good luck to a fine gentleman. Taking over the place of Mrs. Jones at mid year, Mrs. Schrumm has her B.A. from Parsons College. Sponsor of the senior class, she teaches business education. Having taught for six years at Cardinal, Mr. Schreiber teaches Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Analytic Geometry. Currently holding a master of arts in Teaching Secondary Mathematics, he has turned out students who have gone far in the math field. 10 Mr. Prentis is a warm man who is very popular with all students, regardless of whether they like sports or not. He currently master-minds government and U.S. history classes. A new teacher at Cardinal, Mr. Foley has been spectacular in his art teaching and sponsorship of the art and the camera clubs. He also did a fine job in coaching football and wrestling at the junior high. The woman with the light German accent is Mrs. Walker, who graduated from Parsons and teaches physics, chemistry, and bio-chemistry. The main instigator of the annual this year, Mr. Braunger teaches English 11 and 12. Pictures should be different next year, too; he’ll be running the camera club. 11 The man with the wet shoulder”, Mr. Nelson has been a friend in need to the students at Cardinal for the last six years. A favorite guidance counselor, Mr. Nelson at press-time was still worried about the challenge of Mr. Foster as supreme ping-pong player”. When bleeding to death, you will generally find warm smiles and a big bandage in the person of Mrs. Tho- mann. The charming lady also sponsors medical careers” field trips. 12 French is a fascinating subject under a fantastic teacher and the delightful person of our bewitching Mrs. Onffroy. Educational background includes a M.A. degree from a small college in Ver- mont. Combining cute plays with almost-individual tutoring, Mrs. Onffroy represents the best in high school teaching. A master at ping-pong, audio-visual aids, girl's basketball, and a full round of teaching subjects indicate that we must have a James Bond at Car- dinal. A gruff exterior, Mr. Foster is found to have a very soft heart when better known. Mrs. McFarling was only with us half a year, but she did an excellent job in business education classes. And as Mr. Dean Lane mentioned: She did a fantastic job as sophomore class sponsor. 13 Mr. Lane has taught at Cardinal High School for a total of three years. Doc” is enjoyed by all in his World Geography classes because of his light humor. He fought for his degree of B.S. and M.A. at the University of Iowa and Northeast Missouri State College. A resident of Agency, Mr. Sharp has struggled and come out victorious for a number of ten years at Cardinal. Mr. Sharp is a disciple of Iowa Wesleyan, Northeast Missouri, and Kansas Univer- sity. Mr. Sharp is an excellent teacher of U.S. History and World History. Mr. Wilson has not quite made it for one year here at Cardinal, but already he has obtained many friends. Mr. Wilson at- tended Northeast Missouri State College and from there he got a B.S. in Business Education with a Major in Administration. He is a very good teacher in bookkeeping, typing, and business law. 14 The queen of the English department, Mrs. Shive has been a senior faculty member at Cardinal for twelve years. Her constant practice at sharpening- up students in the area of English and history has given her a respectable aura in her venerable classroom. Keeping a sharp eye out for vanishing socket wrenches, Mr. Arnold has been a respected mem- ber of the staff for eight years at Cardinal. Be- sides keeping Mrs. Mitchell’s cold Chevy running on winter days, he tries to explain why engines invariably blow up at 100 m.p.h. to sadden students. 15 A busy schedule for Miss Watts includes Drill Team, tumbling class, Square Dance Club, cheerleaders, Pep Club, junior high cheerleaders, and finally physical education. She is completing her fourth year of this grueling schedule. COOKS OF SCHOOL: Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Osing, and Mrs. Newland. MECHANICS AND JANITORS: Mr. Velvan Allen, Mr. Marvin Whitmore, and Mr. Everett Garber. 16 GRADUATES Leaders Of A New Decade Senior Class Officers are from left to right: President, Russell Phillips; Secretary, Carol Sumner; Treasurer, Charlotte Dunne; Vice-President, Mark Snyder. The first play of the year, Cyclone Sally, was directed by Mrs. Shive. It was presented on November 4 in the Agency gymnasium. This marvelous three-act comedy was the story of a cos- mopolitan playboy who returned to his home after losing all his money to find a lady growing cabbages on his front lawn. The cast worked hard on this production, and the reward was a smash hit. Actors Wow Audiences! 60 Rayanne, Roger, and Joyce trying to solve a problem. What Are You Trying To Say?” Jim Jerkins was really getting yelled at from his gal, Jenny, in this snot. She had the Irish temper, and he had the bright ideas. At least he thought so. This play was spicy with big stars and wild characters that went crazy back stage. Dear old Jim got stuck in his band-leaders coat ana was almost late for his cue. Slutts, some five jnches smaller than his older brother John, came within three-fourths an inch of breaking his 1964 brother’s con- ference record as he cleared 6-2. Cardinal’s Dave Scherer was a double winner as he won the shot put and discus. Greiner breaks mark The only record-breaking per- formance was a sparkling two- mile run by Larry Greiner ol Cardinal. Greiner nearly lapped the field as he took over 24 sec- onds off the record. Greiner fin- ished the eight laps in 10:14.7 which easily did away with Pek- in’s Randy Lowenberg run ol 10:38.8 in 1969.
