A Cardinal's head is on the back of the white shield. The shield can be removed and then the uniforms are used for concert band. MISS MADELYN HUNTER Director Headin’ For A Weddin' The hero Homer Hoilowbone, has fallen in love with a debu- tante, Melissa Dugan, whose picture he found in a newspaper wrapped around some fish. He begins a correspondence with Melissa telling her that he lives in a mansion, will be vacationing in Europe, and is a very refined, educated person. Actually, he lives in a shack in the mountains with his dirty, shiftless family. Maw and Fanny Jane work hard, but Paw only eats, sleeps, and teaches Gloria, his pet skunk, to do tricks. Sarah Jo and Gracie spend their time teasing Homer and chasing boys. In the midst of a snow storm, Homer is writing to Melissa when Gracie May grabs it and reads it aloud. Paw insists it is a courtin' letter and demands to know the girl's name. They jump to the con- clusion that it was written to Bertha Blairhouse just as she, her widowed Maw , and her brother arrive to take refuge from the storm. Homer is busily ducking Bertha when another unexpected guest arrives, Melissa Dugan! She tells them she became lost in the snow storm while on her way to marry a handsome, well- educated young gentleman with whom she had been corresponding! Homer desperately tries to keep her from discovering his identity, but his efforts fail and Melissa Dugan learns the truth. Homer finds himself engaged to the boisterous Bertha—until Gracie May tells her that Homer has spells during which he thinks he is a dog. All ends well, however, even for Gloria, the skunk, who becomes a television star! 63 Homecoming CAROL PAYNE QUEEN PATTI E LEAZER SECOND ATTENDANT MARTY KAPRICH LINDA BENSON KAYE EDDY 64 Festivities Homecoming turned out to be a very rewarding event to all the C.H.S. students in spite of the stormy weather. At the Bonfire Carol Payne was crowned Homecoming Queen, with Carolyn Brewer and Pattie Leazer as first and second attendants. Umbrellas turned out to be as popular as the students but everybody was in smiles. The home- coming night was a complete success for the football boys because of their victory over Van Buren. 65 After the game the students danced in the gaily decorated commons until twelve. ENCHANTED ISLE The Prom held on May 5, 1962, was one of many merits. The deco- rations were extremely picturesque. A large Hula dancer, created by an artistically talented faculty member, Mrs. Eklofe, adorned one of the walls. In every corner a palm tree was to be found. The table decorations were made of palm trees and Hula dancers. The meal was definitely one of the high points of the evening and consisted of steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, rolls, jelio, milk and coffee, and for dessert banana cream pie. Speeches were given by Kendall Fligg, president of the junior class, Terry Durflinger, president of the senior class, Jim Fisher, Miss Hunter, Mr. Hill, Mr. Leland, and Mr. Johnson. Judy Picken and Ted Hull were crowned Queen and King of Cardinal and the entertainment of Doyle Quick and his band concluded the evening. Gridiron VARSITY FIRST ROW: Left to Right, G. Wheaton, J. COACHING STAFF The two men chiefly responsible for Cardinal's rugged football team this year are Coach Chuck Hamisch and Asst. Red Burnett. These men being football players themselves, taught the Comets many plays that made them a top-notch team. SEASON SUMMARY The Cardinal Comets finished a strong second in the Blackhawk Conference, losing only once to number one Pekin, and being tied by a strong Central team. Cardinal's main strength was its fine defensive team, which was number one in the Blackhawk Conference. Cardinal's offensive team was led throughout the year by Larry Baugh and Dave Grimm, two hard-charging Cardinal players. Cardinal's 6-2-1 season showed still an improvement in last year's record. The 1963 teams' outlook is also bright and will depend largely on lettermen Jerry Hemm, Harry Martsching, Larry Baugh, Dave Grimm, Dick Chance, Bob Fligg, Dor Fountain, Graig Baayen, Greg Wheaton, and Junior Howard. Cardinal had only eleven men report for the squad this year, but they were fortunate in having one for each weight except the 103 and 112 pound classes which Cardinal had to forfeit. Although the team's season record was not too impressive. Coach Harden feels that the season was quite successful in that out of 102 matches actually wrestled. Cardinal won 41 while losing 53 and tying 8. Impressive records gained by Cardinal wrestlers this first year were Larry Dovico in the 95 pound class with a 6-3-1 record, who also reached the semi-finals in the sectional tournament; Harry Martsching in the 154 pound class with a 7-4 record; and Ed Abernathy in the heavyweight division with an 8-2 record. We hope for a more successful season next year since we have nine of our eleven wrestlers returning; and with the interest that has been built up this year our squad will be larger and more experienced.
