AGENCY BATAVIA ELDON SELMA GROWTH Growth is essential to life. The purpose of a school is to mold the lives ol young people; therefore, it must grow with the needs of youth. That is what Cardinal com- munity is doing. It has grown from four independent districts into one large community school district. The four former high school buildings now house the grades and junior high classes, thus allowing all high school students to attend the new, modern, centrally- located building. I tried to rouse my wife out of bed to tell her of my plan to hunt up our class- mates of 1961 at CHS. She buried her head in the pillow and mumbled something about my being nuts and told me to go away. I finally got her interested in the idea and we de- cided the best way to start was to find Mr. Richard E. Hill, our principal. I called a friend who was in the FBI, and he helped us locate him in New York as President of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. We spent all morning canceling appointments and dates we had for that week. After lunch we climbed aboard our private jet for New York OFFICE OF RICHARD E. HILL, PRESIDENT OF THE METROPOLITAN LIFE IN- SURANCE CO. It was a crisp fall day, the kind of day that makes you want to reminisce with old friends. The office door opened, and my private secretary told me that two people were waiting to see me They were Vicki Campbell and her husband Ted Hull who is a rancher in New Mexico! They had a 1962 Cardinal annual with them, and they were look- ing up all their classmates of '62. Soon we were discussing the old students of CHS. 'Yes, I know about several of them. When I was an insurance salesman, I met many of them. Last week I drove by Cardinal. How it has grown! It covers at least four acres now; one would hardly recognize it. He continued to say. Connie Swinney has recently composed a concerto, which she recorded at Carnegie Hall. Terry Durflinger has just returned from Europe, where he set a new record in the Grand Prix. Judy Waddle and Beverly Snook have jointly opened a very successful matrimonial bureau and have each acquired a husband. Larry Willhoit, Dick Jones, and Mick Benson are all shining shoes at the local barbershop. Nancy McMullin is chief surgical nurse in a Chicago hospital and is hopelessly in love with the head doctor, Gary Rogers. Sharon Martsching is teaching in the Pekin High School, and Mary Ellen Eckelburg lives with her and writes bedtime stories for the Batavia Beacon. Pharmacist Bob Dimmitt was sent up the river last year for illegal distribution of narcotics. I also heard that Reverend Steve Wilkinson is a missionary in Russia trying to recivilize the people who survived the 5,000 Mgt. Bomb blast that wrecked Russia. It was reopened by ex- plorer and adventure scientist, Ronnie Clark. Gail and Jerry Potts now own a string of gas stations throughout the Middle West. Arlene Jeffry and Anita Jarr have an enterprising guinea pig farm that is owned by the Governor of Wisconsin and his wife, who was Sally Streeby. I see a divorce has been granted to Dixie Huffman and Bill Hunter. Russell Graham is a surveyor in Alaska, and I've heard that Marie Fiedler, his wife likes the climate fine. David Courtney's criticism on English literature has been published and is very widely known. Barbara Jackson's novel, LOVE IN THE TWILIGHT HOURS, has just sold a million copies.” Judy Picken and Paul Sorenson run a hot-dog stand in Selma. Charles Ross and Don- ald Rupe are the best photographers in Ottumwa. Victor Hamilton is chief dog-catcher in Batavia. Rosemary Carter decided to keep her fate at home, so she gives vocal les- sons and hates all kinds of men. Karen Crawford is matron at the Eldon laundromat. Carla Potts married Louis Bishop. Ivan McDaniels is a trapper in Canada and Sandra Pearson drives a taxi cab in Waterloo. Linda Major and Karen Mooney preferred matrimony to a business career. Jim Baugh is a waiter in a tea room where Floyd Spil- man specializes in cake baking. Richard Lewis is a butcher and works in Harley Craft's meat market. Nila Black is Herb Marnholtz's private secretary. He has become quite wealthy from oil investments. Karen McCoy, Beverly Gruwell, Sandra Lewis, and Marilyn Miller found an ancient city in Asia Minor. Charles Hart, tired of common life, joined the Foreign Legion. Shirley Winston teaches school in South Carolina. Margie Wharton is a clerk at Penny's and Sue Potts is one of the chief designers of Simplicity. Kay Gonterman married a minister and lives in Kansas City.” Last night we heard on K .1.0. A. the Jim Taylor orchestra. Cheryl Dale and her hus- band Ronnie Mace now reside south of Bladensburg on a huge pig farm. Jerry Prang is a distinguished lawyer in the huge metropolis of Agency. Linda Teeter operates a motel in Burlington. Mike Gardner and Bill Metcalf own one of the best race horses in the United States. Sandra Streeby is a top designer for M.G.M. Ronnie Giberson runs a helicopter station. Jane Havener went west to seek her fortune and completely disappeared. Dyana Spinks after four hard years of study, married a very influential politician. You know, I think we have located nearly every member of the class,” declared Vicki, except LaVern Payne.” He is a fireman in Miami Beach.” Vicki, do you realize what time it is?” asked Ted. We must hurry for we are late now.” And so they left, leaving me to reflect upon the fates and fortunes of the class- mates of CHS.” ACTIVITIES Cooperation is necessary for growth. The students have expressed their varied interests by working together in different groups.
