Track Cardinal spikemen have once again turned in a suc- cessful season for the Cardinal and Gold. Father Holland, moderator, Coach Harrington, track, and Brother Edward Michael, field, were well rewarded for their many hours spent with the team. Early in the season, the Cross-Country team placed fifth in the St. Iohn's University meet and third in the C.H.S.A.A. sectionals. Tom Brady placed, First in the Iona College Cross-Country competition. Other out- standing members of the team were Captain Ralph Venturini, Paul Byrne, james Harshberger and john Brady. ' Coach Harrington,s harriers were also successful in their indoor competition. In the C.H.S.A.A. Relay Carni- val the mile relay team of Frank Pisanti, Paul Byrne, Roy Howe and Richard McMahon copped Hrst place honors. The 880-yard team also bested its competition. The Cardinals took second place honors at the Bishop Loughlin Games. The team was paced by Frank Pisantfs second place performance in the Open 600-yard run. 135 Paul Byrne also took second place in the same category at the St. Francis Prep Games. On january 16, Hayes hosted 147 teams in the eleventh annual Cardinal Hayes Games. Paul Byrne placed second in the 600-yard run and Ralph Rosario also Hnished second in the frosh 880. The team took :Fifth position despite a leg injury to Pisanti during the Mile Relay Event. Paul Byrne Hnished first in the 600- yard event at the N1ayor's Meet. The novice runners finished second in the C.H.S.A.A. novice championships. The varsity achieved an identical showing in the C.H.S.A.A. Sectionals. On February 27, the Cardinal spikemen rallied to a hard-contested fourth place in the C.H.S.A.A. Cham- pionships at Madison Square Carden, Outstanding Hayesmen were W-'illiam Quinn, Iohn Gilchrist. Richard McMahon and john Brady who came in second in the two-mile relay. Herman Berges in the S0-yard dash and Paul Byrne in the six lap relay gained well deserved laurels.
