After a tough battle, the Cards gained the lead and an important victory. Dorch and Domitrovits, with 16 tallies each, led Hayes to a 62-59 win. At this point in the schedule the Redbirds took a breather as they played Riceis hapless five. Hayes took an early lead and was never in danger. Dorch's 21 points gave him top scoring plaudits, Domitrovits followed closely with 19 points. This contest ended league play for the Cards with a 7-5 won-lost record. The Redbirds then practiced for the future, still hoping that they had a future, on Xavier. The Cadets should have stayed in their barracks, as Hayes ran all over them, 76-46. joe Domitrovits scored 23 before he was taken out in the third quarter. An explanation of league action is necessary here to clarify Hayes, position in the standings. On February 5, All Hallows defeated St. Helena 70-63, and on February 11, a determined Power quintet invaded St. Helenals territory and dealt the Helenians a crushing blow as they defeated them by a single point. These losses by St. Helena coupled with Hayes' victories placed Power, Hayes, and St. Helena in a three way tie for second place. And so with a triple tie for second place, Cardinal Hayes played St. Helena on February 13 in the Mount St. Michael Gym, the site of an earlier overtime loss to the Helenians. But this time the action was reversed, as St. Helena led all the way only to be tied by Hayes in the waning moments of the game. The sharpshooting of Bill Griffin, who scored all of his 14 points in the second half, coupled with the board work and 28 tallies of 129 Domitrovits lets fly with his patented one-hand jump shot 1n the Playoffs. Biondi sinks a foul shot in the closing minutes of Hayes 69-68 win over St. Helena. twenty-five foot jump shot by Humann sent the game into overtime. A sure win and a stellar per- formance by the big M-Myles Dorch, who scored 26 points, went out the window as Hayes missed fourteen foul shots in the final quarter and the three-minute overtime period. St. Helena won 55-54. This exhibition earned Dorch a spot on the Class A All-Star Team. Resuming league play, the Cards faced Rice in what proved to be a very easy win. The Cards romped 59-43. Again Dorch was high scorer with 23, Domitrovits followed with 11 markers. The Varsity journeyed to Xavier where they met a sur- prisingly strong Cadet squad. But Dorch's 29' tal- lies ended Xavier's dreams of an upset. The final score read: Hayes 66-Xavier 58. With revenge in their hearts for an earlier two-point loss, the Cards dumped Manhattanis little Iaspers 57-53. Ioe Domitrovits rang up 21 tallies to take high scoring honors, while Dorch tallied 20 and grabbed numer- ous rebounds. Still on the road, the Cardinal and Cold hiked up the Concourse to meet All Hallows. The league-leading Gaels dealt the Redbirds their fourth loss in league play, 61-57. Dorch led Hayes with 15 before he fouled out mid-way in the fourth quarter on a doubtful call bythe referee. In the annual contest with Stepinac, the Crusaders over- powered the Cards 63-55. The combined efforts of the Crusader's Mastropolo and Cohane, 17 and 15 points respectively, nullified the outstanding effort on the part of Dorch who scored 27. The Cards resumed league action on Ianuary 22 and suffered their third consecutive setback at the hands of Power. The final arithmetic was Power 53-Hayes 47. Domitrovits tallied 20 in this losing effort. With five losses in league play the Cards, hopes for a playoH berth were somewhat dimmed as they faced St. Helena. But where there is life there is hope, and the Redbirds showed plenty of life as they rose to the occasion and eked out a 69-68 victory over the Helenians. This was a display of excellent team play as three Cards scored in double figures. Dorch with 20, followed by Domitrovits and Dillon, with 19 and 16 respectively, proved to be too much for St. Helena in this contest. With .lwqfwf Steve Dillon steadies himself on the foul line. Dillon holds the ball high to protect against the close guarding of Stepinac. Going high off the floor, Dorch sinks a jump shot. A fast break and two points are registered to Del Salvio. Myles Dorch, saved the day for the Cards. Dorch sank four out of four free throws in the overtime to clinch the game for Hayes. This 68-67 thriller gave the Flying Redbirds second place in the final league standings behind All Hallows, who compiled a 10-1 record. Their only loss was to Hayes. The opening round of the G.H.S.A.A. playoffs saw the Cards facing St. Francis Prep. After a see- saw battle that saw the lead change several times, the Redbirds took charge and eventually won the game 59-54. Coach Bernie Gallagher stayed with his starting five throughout the entire game and this maneuver paid dividends when four of the Hayes quintet scored in double figures. Hayes next met Loughlin at Fordham. Myles Dorch provided the crowd with sufficient entertainment for the day, scoring 25 points in Hayes' 55-44 win. Enthusiasm was high as the Cards faced Stepinac in the semi- final round, but at the end of the first half Stepinac took a commanding 10-point lead. It was evident that the Cards faced a tough up hill battle, and battle they did. Hayesmen present at the N.Y.U. Gym roused the squad with their loud cheering and unfaltering support. The Cards quickly began to close the gap, only to have it widened by Stepinac. Yet they never gave up, as once again they came back even taking a short lived lead. But this effort snapped their strength and coupled with the loss of Dorch, Dillon and Griffin, the Cards fell behind never again to be on top. The final score read Stepinac 59-Hayes 55. This was a heart breaking loss for Bernie Gallagher, the Hayes squad, and their loyal followers. St. Helena provided the com- petition in a consolation game played at Fordham. St. Helena won 52-47. Dorch tallied 17 points and at the conclusion of the game was named to the C.H.S.A.A. All-City Five. Hayes, as a result of their playoff wins, gained fourth place in the city championships. Witli the regular season over, Hayes entered the annual Iona Invitational Tournament, and promptly spanked Regis 63-44, Dorch's 24 markers capturing scoring honors. The Redbirds continued their win- ning ways by crushing St. Nicholas of Tolentine 66-40.
