FLYING REDBIRDS Front Row: Earl Johnson, Joe Diodati, Frank Purcell, Myles Dorch, Pat Martin, Frank Biondi, Steve Dillon, Frank Del Salvio. Back Hou, Coach Bernie Gallagher, Manager Bob McDonnell, Ioe Domitrovits, Ben Malveaux, Henry Chlupsa, Peter Hunt, Bill Griffin, Manager Bill Tyler, Manager Andy Cilhooley. Basketball VVith the laurels of the C.H.S.A.A. within their grasp, the Redbirds, led by their captain and bril- liant All-City center, Myles Dorch, bowed to Archbishop Stepinac in the semi-Hnals of the play- offs. But this 1960 team of Dorch and Eve juniors- Ioe Domitrovits, Steve Dillon, Frank Del Salvio, and Bill Griffin-carried Hayes into the playoffs after a two year absence and also raised the spirit of Hayes to fever pitch. November 27,. was Old Timeris Dayv at Hayes when the Alumni and the Cards battled before a packed house. The former Hayes greats led the Varsity most of the way, but at the final buzzer Dorch and Co. were in front 57-54. This 22-point performance by Dorch gave light of things to come. The Cards opened their season against Manhat- tan Prep and came out on the short end of a 62-60 score. Dorch tallied 27 to capture high scoring honors. In their next encounter Coach Bernie Gallagher's plan was to move the ball quickly against the slow moving All Hallows squad. His plan was successful. At the half Hayes led 31-26, and after more of the same heads-up basketball the game ended with the Cards initial league vic- tory. The final score was 66-54. Dorch was high point man with 22 but the fine play of Frank Biondi, who tallied 17, insured the victory. The Varsity 127 next played host to Power Memorial, losing 53-49. The Redbirds made only 9 of 19 foul shots while Power missed only two. There was the margin of victory. Domitrovits, Dorch, and Biondi each scored II markers. In their first away game, Hayes was welcomed hy St. Helena's, who promptly swamped the Redbirds 67-47 for the Cards most embarrassing loss. Dorch's tally of I4 points was high for Hayes but throughout the contest he shot very poorly. After suffering three losses in their first four league contests Hayes traveled to La Salle in an attempt to get back into the win column. The score of 38-27 at the end of three quarters didn't do much to brighten the picture. But at this point Dorch, who up to this had scored only four points, took charge. He drove, he jumped shot in spectacu- lar fashion, and as is fate, it was his jump shot from the foul line at the buzzer that forced the game into overtime. Dorch chalked up 20, as the Cards won 55-54. During the Christmas vacation the Redbirds participated in the annual XI.I.T., held at Mount St. Michael Gym. Hayes was paired against St. Helena in the opening round of the tournament. The Cards had a comfortable margin going into the final quarter. Then they literally blew it, as a

A sure win and a stellar per- formance by the big M-Myles Dorch, who scored 26 points, went out the window as Hayes missed fourteen foul shots in the final quarter and the three-minute overtime period. St. Helena won 55-54. This exhibition earned Dorch a spot on the Class A All-Star Team. Resuming league play, the Cards faced Rice in what proved to be a very easy win. The Cards romped 59-43. Again Dorch was high scorer with 23, Domitrovits followed with 11 markers. The Varsity journeyed to Xavier where they met a sur- prisingly strong Cadet squad. But Dorch's 29' tal- lies ended Xavier's dreams of an upset. The final score read: Hayes 66-Xavier 58. With revenge in their hearts for an earlier two-point loss, the Cards dumped Manhattanis little Iaspers 57-53. Ioe Domitrovits rang up 21 tallies to take high scoring honors, while Dorch tallied 20 and grabbed numer- ous rebounds. Still on the road, the Cardinal and Cold hiked up the Concourse to meet All Hallows. The league-leading Gaels dealt the Redbirds their fourth loss in league play, 61-57. Dorch led Hayes with 15 before he fouled out mid-way in the fourth quarter on a doubtful call bythe referee. In the annual contest with Stepinac, the Crusaders over- powered the Cards 63-55. The combined efforts of the Crusader's Mastropolo and Cohane, 17 and 15 points respectively, nullified the outstanding effort on the part of Dorch who scored 27. The Cards resumed league action on Ianuary 22 and suffered their third consecutive setback at the hands of Power. The final arithmetic was Power 53-Hayes 47. Domitrovits tallied 20 in this losing effort. With five losses in league play the Cards, hopes for a playoH berth were somewhat dimmed as they faced St. Helena. But where there is life there is hope, and the Redbirds showed plenty of life as they rose to the occasion and eked out a 69-68 victory over the Helenians. This was a display of excellent team play as three Cards scored in double figures. Dorch with 20, followed by Domitrovits and Dillon, with 19 and 16 respectively, proved to be too much for St. Helena in this contest. With .lwqfwf Steve Dillon steadies himself on the foul line.
