IONA 7-HAYES 0 After being blanked in two away games the Cardinals returned to Downing Stadium to do battle with the Gaels of Iona. In a game char- acterized by determination and hard play, Iona scored a 7-0 victory. This loss was Hayes first defeat to Iona in five years. The first quarter saw little offensive action as both teams displayed their seemingly invulner- able defenses. Hayes gained a short spark of life in the second quarter. Halfback Ed Forrest noted an opening in the Iona formation and scrambled 35 yards before being brought down by an alert Gael defender. The Cards were unable to buck the Gael winds and the drive ended. The scoreboard still registered a score- less deadlocked after an uneventful third quarter. Late in the game Iona chalked up the winning touchdown with the recovery of a loose ball in the Hayes' end-zone. The Gaels then successfully executed a one point conversion. HAYES 6-MOUNT ST. MICHAEL 6 Hayes and Mount St. Michael divided the turkey on Thanksgiving Day. A crowd, 12,000 strong, watched intently as the arch-rivals clashed. The victory starved Cardinals sent Mike Gallagher hurtling 40 yards over the strong Mount defense. The Mounties managed to stave off the Hayes attack. In the second quarter Mount drove down to the three yard line where the Redbird secondary held. On the ensuing plays tackle Bill Shoeck recovered a Hayes fumble in the end-zone for the TD.
