End ST. FRANCIS PREP 14-HAYES 0 In their first away game the Krywicki eleven trekked to Brooklyn to vie with the terrible Terriers of St. Francis Prep. The Cards suffered a 14-O setback. Hayes gained possession early in the game and attempted several passes. Robert Bruce in- tercepted a low flying toss and returned the pig- skin 20 yards to score. Tom Armstead made good on the two point conversion. A 55 yard pass and a 35 yard run by Robert Bruce had the Terriers growling again in the second period. The Cardinals regained the ball but Bruce caught another Hayes toss and scored on a 35 yard gallop. The conversion attempt was futile and the Prepsters settled for a 14-0 lead. With penalties checking almost every drive neither team was able to advance in the second half. However, in the closing minutes of the game, Armstead picked off another Hayes pass and ran 35 yards but Ed Horvath latched on to the scampering Brooklynite, short of the goal line. CHAMINADE 20-HAYES 0 Accompanied by a large and spirited contin- gent of Hayes followers, the Cardinals journeyed to Mineola to meet Chaminade. The Flyers defeated Hayes 20-0. The Redbirds held Chaminade in the first quarter, despite quarterback Brandeweide's passes. The Flyers' ace finally connected in the second period. End Iohn Geraghty was on target and flew into the Hayes end-zone. Mike McDonough crashed through the rugged Cardin- al line with the conversion. In the same period McDonough again lowered his flaps and glided across the goal stripe. The Cards held the leather throughout the third period but were unable to muster a scoring drive. In the final period, Brandeweide again set his sights to connect with Jeff Tobey for six points. Holy Cross chalked up another touchdown when Patrick Keneally blocked a quick kick and center Richard Basticco fell on the ball in the end zone. Leon Kane kicked a one point conversion. Holy Cross again forced Hayes to kick in the fourth quarter and again Keneally blocked it. The Knights couldnit fashion the necessary scoring surge. The Hayes' defense held off the driving Long Islanders as the game ended. STEPINAC 8-HAYES 0 Hayes, next opponent was Stepinac. The in- vading eleven from Westchester eked out a thrilling 8-O victory over its brother school. The game was a treat for advocates of strong defensive football. Neither team could muster an offensive drive in the Hrst quarter as the rugged secondaries sparkled. The second period again saw the inability of either team to crack the stone walls set up by the defensive lines. The third quarter was a carbon copy of the first half and the possibility of a deadlock loomed overhead. Then, late in the game, Lady Luck shined on Stepinac with the recovery of a high snap from center inside the Cardinal 10 yard stripe. The suburbanites scored a successful conversion gave them an 8-O lead. Thus the game ended and Stepinac carried home the Bishop Dubois Cup, awarded to the victor in this Archdiocesan rivalry. 121 VVeisse scampers around right end. Luceri's punt is almost blocked. IONA 7-HAYES 0 After being blanked in two away games the Cardinals returned to Downing Stadium to do battle with the Gaels of Iona. In a game char- acterized by determination and hard play, Iona scored a 7-0 victory. This loss was Hayes first defeat to Iona in five years. The first quarter saw little offensive action as both teams displayed their seemingly invulner- able defenses. Hayes gained a short spark of life in the second quarter. Halfback Ed Forrest noted an opening in the Iona formation and scrambled 35 yards before being brought down by an alert Gael defender. The Cards were unable to buck the Gael winds and the drive ended. The scoreboard still registered a score- less deadlocked after an uneventful third quarter. Late in the game Iona chalked up the winning touchdown with the recovery of a loose ball in the Hayes' end-zone. The Gaels then successfully executed a one point conversion. HAYES 6-MOUNT ST. MICHAEL 6 Hayes and Mount St. Michael divided the turkey on Thanksgiving Day. A crowd, 12,000 strong, watched intently as the arch-rivals clashed. The victory starved Cardinals sent Mike Gallagher hurtling 40 yards over the strong Mount defense. The Mounties managed to stave off the Hayes attack. In the second quarter Mount drove down to the three yard line where the Redbird secondary held. On the ensuing plays tackle Bill Shoeck recovered a Hayes fumble in the end-zone for the TD.
