ff N Q ,f ' Illvl CONNOLLY 5 Halfback f E L HOLY CROSS 15-HAYES 6 r Hayes faced a spirited Holy Cross team in its first league encounter. The Knights outplayed the Cardinals to a 15-6 victory. In the first quarter, halfback Martin Feely slipped through the Hayes line for a 29 yard touchdown. The Knights gained two additional points with a suc- cessful conversion. The Cards struck back as quarterback Frank Orlando hurled a 36 yard TD pass. The conversion failed. Holy Cross chalked up another touchdown when Patrick Keneally blocked a quick kick and center Richard Basticco fell on the ball in the end zone. Leon Kane kicked a one point conversion. Holy Cross again forced Hayes to kick in the fourth quarter and again Keneally blocked it. The Knights couldnit fashion the necessary scoring surge. The Hayes' defense held off the driving Long Islanders as the game ended. STEPINAC 8-HAYES 0 Hayes, next opponent was Stepinac. The in- vading eleven from Westchester eked out a thrilling 8-O victory over its brother school. The game was a treat for advocates of strong defensive football. Neither team could muster an offensive drive in the Hrst quarter as the rugged secondaries sparkled. The second period again saw the inability of either team to crack the stone walls set up by the defensive lines. The third quarter was a carbon copy of the first half and the possibility of a deadlock loomed overhead. Then, late in the game, Lady Luck shined on Stepinac with the recovery of a high snap from center inside the Cardinal 10 yard stripe. The suburbanites scored a successful conversion gave them an 8-O lead. Thus the game ended and Stepinac carried home the Bishop Dubois Cup, awarded to the victor in this Archdiocesan rivalry. 121 VVeisse scampers around right end. Luceri's punt is almost blocked. XAVIER 6-HAYES 0 Hayes opened its gridiron season with a 6-0 loss at the hands of Xavier. The defeat snapped a two year victory skein over the Cadets. Two interceptions, one by john Weisse and the other by Richard Caydos were to no avail as the Cards were unable to penetrate the sur- prisingly strong Xavier line. A forty yard run by Cadet Bob Lemanowski momentarily' shocked the Hayes' fans, but a penalty nullified the scamper. In the second quarter, Lemanowski again spotted an opening in the Cardinal second- ary and hastened to pay-dirt. The Concourse eleven checked a Xavier attempt to add another two points to their one touchdown advantage. The second half provided little consolation for Hayesmen. Xavieris strong defense rendered the Cardinals incapable of launching a prolonged offensive attack. Thus, the subway commandoes returned to their sixteenth street barracks with their mission well accomplished. HAYES 42-ST. IOHN'S PREP 14 Hayes recovered from their initial setback to wall'op the Redmen of St. Iohn's Prep 42-14. The romp began with Iohn Weisse executing a sparkling 33 yard touchdown run. The TD happy Cards could not be stopped as fullback Carlo Di Bemardo and halfback Bob Filippone each scored six points. The Cardinals continued their winning ways as Richard Caydos scored twice in the second quarter. joining the victory band-wagon, Ed Forrest mounted his horse and gallopped 78 yards to the Redmen's reservation. The half ended with the incredulous spectators gazing at the scoreboard which read Haves 36, St. Iohnis 0. In the third period, Bob Filippone tallied his second TD with a 22 yard run. Eugene McElroy sneaked through the jubilant Hayes line to score for the hapless Prepsters. A less hec- tic fourth quarter witnessed each team scoring six points and eleven scalpless little 'Indians were last seen retreating to their Brooklyn- wigwams. Y M Y DAN EVANS Guard .

End ST. FRANCIS PREP 14-HAYES 0 In their first away game the Krywicki eleven trekked to Brooklyn to vie with the terrible Terriers of St. Francis Prep. The Cards suffered a 14-O setback. Hayes gained possession early in the game and attempted several passes. Robert Bruce in- tercepted a low flying toss and returned the pig- skin 20 yards to score. Tom Armstead made good on the two point conversion. A 55 yard pass and a 35 yard run by Robert Bruce had the Terriers growling again in the second period. The Cardinals regained the ball but Bruce caught another Hayes toss and scored on a 35 yard gallop. The conversion attempt was futile and the Prepsters settled for a 14-0 lead. With penalties checking almost every drive neither team was able to advance in the second half. However, in the closing minutes of the game, Armstead picked off another Hayes pass and ran 35 yards but Ed Horvath latched on to the scampering Brooklynite, short of the goal line. CHAMINADE 20-HAYES 0 Accompanied by a large and spirited contin- gent of Hayes followers, the Cardinals journeyed to Mineola to meet Chaminade. The Flyers defeated Hayes 20-0. The Redbirds held Chaminade in the first quarter, despite quarterback Brandeweide's passes. The Flyers' ace finally connected in the second period. End Iohn Geraghty was on target and flew into the Hayes end-zone. Mike McDonough crashed through the rugged Cardin- al line with the conversion. In the same period McDonough again lowered his flaps and glided across the goal stripe. The Cards held the leather throughout the third period but were unable to muster a scoring drive. In the final period, Brandeweide again set his sights to connect with Jeff Tobey for six points. Although playing for a losing cause, Paul Buonaccorsi captured the C.H.S.F.L.'s Lineman of the Week accolade. JOHN TOGNINO
