XAVIER 6-HAYES 0 Hayes opened its gridiron season with a 6-0 loss at the hands of Xavier. The defeat snapped a two year victory skein over the Cadets. Two interceptions, one by john Weisse and the other by Richard Caydos were to no avail as the Cards were unable to penetrate the sur- prisingly strong Xavier line. A forty yard run by Cadet Bob Lemanowski momentarily' shocked the Hayes' fans, but a penalty nullified the scamper. In the second quarter, Lemanowski again spotted an opening in the Cardinal second- ary and hastened to pay-dirt. The Concourse eleven checked a Xavier attempt to add another two points to their one touchdown advantage. The second half provided little consolation for Hayesmen. Xavieris strong defense rendered the Cardinals incapable of launching a prolonged offensive attack. Thus, the subway commandoes returned to their sixteenth street barracks with their mission well accomplished. HAYES 42-ST. IOHN'S PREP 14 Hayes recovered from their initial setback to wall'op the Redmen of St. Iohn's Prep 42-14. The romp began with Iohn Weisse executing a sparkling 33 yard touchdown run. The TD happy Cards could not be stopped as fullback Carlo Di Bemardo and halfback Bob Filippone each scored six points. The Cardinals continued their winning ways as Richard Caydos scored twice in the second quarter. joining the victory band-wagon, Ed Forrest mounted his horse and gallopped 78 yards to the Redmen's reservation. The half ended with the incredulous spectators gazing at the scoreboard which read Haves 36, St. Iohnis 0. In the third period, Bob Filippone tallied his second TD with a 22 yard run. Eugene McElroy sneaked through the jubilant Hayes line to score for the hapless Prepsters. A less hec- tic fourth quarter witnessed each team scoring six points and eleven scalpless little 'Indians were last seen retreating to their Brooklyn- wigwams. Y M Y DAN EVANS Guard .
