Hayes Debaters Win Gannon Trophy The Father Higgins Debating Society, under the capable and enthusiastic direction of Father Grace, this year scored an enviable record of achievement to main- tain the high standards set by their predecessors. Par- ticipating inthe various tournaments sponsored by the Catholic Forensic League, the Hayes debaters scored many victories in the field of oratory. The total record of the year's activity in inter-scholastic competition was forty-five victories against eighteen defeats. One of the triumphs of the year was their winning of the Father Gannon Trophy over twenty-four other Catholic High Schools, representing the eastern sea- board, in a Tournament of Debate conducted by Ford- ham University. Hayes was represented by William O'Sullivan, Charles Angelino, James Cully and James Tallon. The successful orators then traveled to Utica to represent Hayes in the state finals sponsored by the National Forensic League. In the field of humorous declamation Richard Ledwith emerged third, and the team of O'Sullivan, Angelino, Cully and Tallon won third place in New York State. Another high point of the year came on April 2Oth when the team of James Tallon and James Cully de- feated Regis High School in the Annual Public Debate, Speaking on the topic, Resolved that the American People should reject the Welfare State , the Hayes speakers won by a unanimous decision. On May l2th the orators of Hayes will engage in a tournament sponsored by St. John's Prep of Brooklyn, and on May l8 and i9 will be represented in the Grand Tournament conducted by the Catholic Forensic League. Father Grace and his debaters are to be com- mended for the glory they have brought to Hayes and to themselves.
