With his Jayvee Baseball team still unde- feated after six games, Father Pavis, the spirit- ed coach of our future stars on the diamond, reported that the prospects of an undefeated season were strong. However, the All Hallows games were to be the,deciding factor. The material of this year's squad rivalled the best that Hayes had yet seen. Keneck, McGarry, and Schmidt formed a fine pitching staff with Keneck showing promise of being a future star. Gillen displayed great ability as a catcher, McPhee was a good all-round player but he shone particularly at first base. Pat O'Leary revealed himself as the slugger of the team and Wellborn proved to be a hustling, hitting outfielder. Father Pavis, as in years past, formed a splendid little ball club. This year he was as- sisted by Brother Wright, who was of great service to him in directing and developing the team. The Swimming team, with Father Anglin as its new mentor, completed its most successful season so far, taking third place in the Catholic High School championships and capturing its first trophy. Bob Brennan retained his first place in the lOO-yard breaststroke and com- bined with Jerry Curran and Charlie Miller to take first place honors in the medley relay race. Curran and O'Donnell added second place points in the lOO-yard backstroke and 50- yard free-style events respectively. ln the National Catholic Meet Hayes crowned its first national champion in the per- son of Jerry Curran who won the lOO-yard backstroke. However, the medley team of Curran, Brennan and Miller was defeated for the first time, but took second place finishing about three-tenths of a second behind the pace-setters.
