When Nat Volpe, our basketball coach for seven years, moved to Stepinac last September as head of the Physical Education department, the task of coaching the Hayes 5 was under- taken by the head of our own Physical Educa- tion department, Bernie Gallagher. That his first season was a tremendous success is proven by the final record of twenty wins against four losses that our varsity racked up. After proving their ability by defeating the all-time greats of past Hayes quintets, 54-50, the Redbirds proceeded to gobble up Bishop Loughlin in their first league game 52-4l, giving the fans an idea of things to come. Liv- ing up to expectations, the team then quickly defeated St. Simon Stock, Fordham Prep, our arch rivals-Mt. St. Michael, St. Ann's, All Hallows, Power Memorial and Rice. Finally the flying Cardinals met defeat at the hands of a fast Regis five after a hard-fought game, 49-46. Showing that they could not be discour- aged, they went on to crush LaSalle 58-37 and in a return game with the Mounties the Cardin- als again showed a collection of fast breaks and expert pivots to hand them another defeat to the tune of 63-37. St. Ann's and All Hallows again broke the chain of continual victories by defeating Hayes 42-32 and 3O-28 respectfully. Undaunted, however, the Redbirds took to the courts against Power, Fordham, Rice, Loughlin and LaSalle successively, losing only to Bishop Loughlin. Finishing the regular schedule of the season in true Hayes tradition, they defeated the cadets of Xavier, 49-4l , taking third place in the C. H. S. A. A. league.
