Besides the coverage of current school news, the special features of the paper had us anticipating each copy. Under the direction of Father Loughman, faculty moderator, Editor John McNamee and his associates worked tirelessly every month to meet their publication deadline. At the Columbia Scholastic Press Convention this Spring their efforts were rewarded when the CHALLENGER was awarded a first-place rating in the annual school newspaper competition for maintaining high standards of journalism. O I I I Hoping to maintain the high standards of year- book production set by staffs that preceded them, the members of the l949 CALENDAR set to work early in this year, Under the direction of Father Delaney, faculty adviser, Harold Donohue, editor-in- chief, assigned the various tasks and directed the supervision of detailed work. The theme selected was The Spirit of Hayes because it vibrates in the life of every Hayes man and will help him recall the fond memories of years spent here. There were worries and headaches as the months passed, but the fun we had in 224 lessened them. The effort expended in producing this edition of the CALENDAR was great. Our only hope is that the Class of '49 will treasure it in the years to come. l3l
