4666 Father Matthew and Father Corrigan combined energies to direct the Dance Commitee this year and the success of the many Hayes dances is a tribute to the hard work done by them and the members of the com- mittee. The highlight of the year is the Senior Prom which is to be held this year on May 26th at the Hotel Statler. ln preparation for that affair the Dance Committee has arranged instruction in ballroom dancing for those not skilled in the art. FRONT ROW: Richard Brent, Richard Grier, Joseph Huber, John O'Connor, John McGann. SECOND ROW: John O'Brien, Gilbert Gonzalez, Gerard Seagriff, John Ryan, Lawrence Kinsella. THIRD ROW: Michael Winiarz, Emil Deveau, Michael Langan, Ronald Berger, John McGarvey, Frank Molinaro. John D'Ambrosio rehearses a speech before Father Sexton and other club members. SITTING: Vincent Capowski, Patrick Curran, Edward Walsh, George Cannon, James Tomonto. STANDING: Edward Harnby. STANDING: Father Mathews and Father Corrigan. The purpose of the Public Speaking Club, under the direction of Father Sexton, is to develop and improve the speak- ing ability of the students, the importance of which cannot be overemphasized. During the year Hayes was represented in contests sponsored by the Journal-American, the Ameri- can Legion and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and al- though our speakers took no firsts, they credited them- selves and Hayes. As the CALENDAR goes to press, the club is looking forward to the Holy Name Society Contest in which it is hoped that Edward Walsh will be victorious. II7

D 7 This year again the Hayes Debating Society, under the supervision of Father Grace, played a prominent part in the program of the Catholic Forensic League. ln an interscholastic Debate Tournament sponsored by the League, Hayes acted as host to sixteen competing high schools and placed third with Anthony Andreacchi, Vincent Brennan, John D'Ambrosio and Edward Walsh winning four out of six debates. ln the course of the year they gained twenty- nine victories against sixteen losses in their debates with their annual op- ponents. The specific results are recorded on the following page. Hayes speakers were also heard at various civic functions. ln city-wide competition Vincent Capowski and Edward Walsh won two of the coveted Chairmanships in the New York Daily Mirror Forum held in December. Hayes was the only school to capture two of them. Anthony Andreacchi was one of two students from the Bronx and Manhattan to speak at the forum sponsored by St. John's University on the Atomic Era. He also appeared on the New York Times Youth Broadcast on April 23rd, discussing the topic, Vital Issues in the News. ln the Dramatic Declamation Contest of the Catholic Forensic League Vincent Brennan took fourth place, competing with sixteen other schools. The climax of the year's activities came on April 26th when the team of Anthony Andreacchi and Vincent Brennan defeated Xavier High School in the annual public debate in Brady Auditorium. 9
